November 1, 2013: The Old Neighborhood

Last night I took the girls to their old neighborhood here and we had a great time. The girls reconnected with their best friends from the block. We live five miles away and yet we hadn't seen them in over a year. We should be better about that.

  1. I hope you guys follow Trevor Plouffe on Twitter. He posts pics of his wife (girlfriend?) and they are spectacular.

    1. Your grit score is: 4.13

You are grittier than at least 80% of the US population.

Excuse me while I roll around in the dirt for a while.

I'm not sure if this puts me closer to being the Nick Punto of the WGOM or not.

    2. It isn't displaying a grit score for me. Just sends me to a page where they want feedback on the survey, without any information about my grit. :-/

    3. Your grit score is: 4.5

You are in the 90th-99th percentile of other users who have taken this test.

It doesn't want to compare me to the US population, apparently.

    4. Huh, 4.63 for me.

I think that truly captures that I'm often stubborn to the point of stupidity. Is that what grit is?

      1. Your grit score is: 2.38

You are grittier than at least 1% of the US population.

I'm pretty sure Gardenhire would run me out of town.

I don't know if the glass is half-full or half-empty!

  2. Your grit score is: 2.88

You are grittier than at least 20% of the US population.

    I'm such a rally-killer

    1. My search for the answer sent me on a quest in which I’d consult pediatric orthopedic surgeons, re-examine decades of pop culture, and track down the one consummately cool high-schooler from East Amherst, N.Y., who might have the answer.

I can tell you that there is no one cool in East Amherst, New York.

    2. The strap argument of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the surprisingly funny 21 Jump Street remake was enjoyable.

      1. I was very reluctant to see that movie, but was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was. The strap conversation was a pretty good bit.

        1. was Johnny Depp in that movie? If not, then I don't care about it. Not a valid representation of the source material.

    3. One strap, unless it's a hiking trip. And it wasn't about being cool for me, it was because putting on both straps is a pain in the ass and I got better things to waste my time on.

I'd like to see the overlap on grittiness vs. number of straps being used.

Comments like this truly capture the essence of what makes the WGOM!

  3. This is unrelated to the Twins, but Colin Wyers was hired by the Astros. Can't say I'm surprised. What was notable to me was this:

I am excited and a little sad to tell you that I’ve been hired by the Houston Astros as a mathematical modeler in their Decision Sciences department. [Emphasis mine]

The Astros have so many stats/analytics people they need a Decision Sciences department.

  4. The Yankees make some news.

Jeter hit .190 (12 for 63) with one homer and seven RBIs this year, playing 13 games at shortstop and four at designated hitter. The Yankees' captain was on the disabled list four times.

When you can sign a 39 year old shortstop coming off that season for $12 million, you gotta do it.

  5. Free(d) Johan Santana. Mets decline his $25 million option.

Santana last saw action in an MLB game on August 17, 2012. He ended up throwing 717 innings with a 3.18 ERA for the Mets while making $137.5 million.

Not bad results when he was able to pitch, but... yeah.

        1. If they're going to roll the dice on a guy they have no idea what they're going to get out of him, bringing Johan home would be at the top of my list.

  6. Here is a trivia question for the day. What player in Twins history wore the jersey with the highest number?

    1. Fun!
I had assumed that most bullpen coaches were former pitchers.

Hope we can get him and Mientkiewicz to coach on the Twins whenever Gardy rides off to the sunset.
