Friday Music Day, November 8, 2013

List: 1 to 4.
1. So, there's like 53 days left in the year.
I've heard little new music for the year that's really gotten me excited.
At least, away from some usual suspects (HHT, Ye, Eric Copeland). Ya'll got something to recommend? For me in particular or others in general.

2. Hey Cheaptoy, does this sound good to you?
Video NSFW due to brief nudity and dripping blood. Maybe slightly more than brief.
Edit: Removed the embed because even the still that shows has gratuitous sideboob and bare back.

3. I want to try listening to this later today. The point at about 0:18, where the really distorted guitars comes in. Broken was the first NIN I heard, I bought the EP on reputation, took it home and put it in. "Pinion" made me crank the volume because it was so quiet, and then "Wish" comes in, loud, but not so bad and then Trent screams and then that point at about 0:18. I thought I'd ruined my speakers. It came up on my cleared and re-filled iPod earlier this week. I don't think I'd ever listened on headphones. The distortion is built in. It's not a speaker error. Whoever did that (Trent? One of the other Nails? Engineer?), that's pretty good work right there. Wanna try the instrumental because Trent's voice and lyrics haven't aged so well for me.

Eh, that's not working so well for me either. Someone wanna mashup some better vox in there for me? Don't even have to go to the chorus. Just the quiets parts and that guitar-breaking-your-speakers sound.

4. OK, now you can share your random 10 lists.

    Notes:
    1. Not one of the greatest GBV songs
    4. Probably one of my fave Dylan "protest" songs
    9. Easily in my top 10 all-time favorite songs

  3. I didn't really much care for it. Much too industrial sounding for me.

    01. Amon Amarth - "Cry of the Blackbirds", With Oden on Our Side
    02. Moonsorrow - "Kylän päässä", Voimasta ja Kunniasta
    03. Behemoth - "Inner Sanctum", The Apostatsy
    04. Enslaved - "Forsaken", Riitiir
    05. Arcg Enemy - "Cosmic Retribution", Black Earth
    06. Nevermore - "Next in Line", The Politics of Ecstasy

    09. Dark Tranquillituy - "Format C: For Cortex", Damage Done
    10. Melechesh - "Tablets of Fate", Sphynx

Today's theme, apparently, is harsh vocals. But holy man, this is an ass kickin' playlist.

    1. Thought maybe you wouldn't, but the vox and Norwegianness made me think "Cheaptoy? Maybe"
Probably not big on saxophones in your metal either, eh?

      1. I don't particularly enjoy the way saxophones sound in general, though I'm certainly not against other instruments in my metal. (The fiddle works particularly well.)

  4. .

    9. They Might Be Giants - "If I Wasn't Shy" - Apollo 18
    T. Weather Report - "Birdland" - Ken Burns Jazz
    B. Robyn - "Hang With Me" - Body Talk

    7. Teehee.
    T. This is one of about 5 songs in the GW spirit band's rotation during the last 15 years.

        1. Very quick review (in the order I saw them):

          1. The Mowglis: they are "trying" wayyyyy too hard. You don't look badass, Mr. Bass Player, when you have a Mike Napoli beard and hair dyed purple, when you also are balding. You just look ridiculous. I do give them credit because I saw several of the members hanging around near the end of the night partying with random concert goers.
          2. Surfer Blood: Pretty generic. Not a whole lot of energy
          3. Fitz & the Tantrums: I didn't realize that Fitz "looks" so old. Still, a very fun, energetic performance.
          4. The Neighbourhood: meh
          5. Matt & Kim: they have the goofiest, most high energy on-stage performance I've seen this side of Macklemore. Their energy is infections, but still the performance left a lot to be desired. About 95% of the music is prerecorded, which I suppose helps them be more energetic because they don't have to concentrate on sounding good. They randomly interject other pop songs into their choruses. Also, saying "[Berting]" everytime you address the audience doesn't make you hard-core or cool, Kim. Anyway, it was fun, but I don't know if I would be too motivated to see them again.
          6. The Joy Formidable: LOUD and fantastic as always. "Whirring" is such a great closing number. Very few people in the crowd seemed to have any interest in them, but it was clear that a lot of people got hooked really quickly.
          7. Two Door Cinema Club: perfectly good show incorporating a lot of lights.
          8. Passion Pit: sadly, we left too early to catch them (it had been a long, hot day)

If I had to rank them on how much I would love to catch them again live, I would say:
Joy Formidable, Fitz & the Tantrums, Two Door Cinema Club, Matt & Kim, Surfer Blood, The Mowglis, and The Neighbourhood

  5. .
    .
    1. Tight Rope - Leon Russell - Carney
    2. Fiesta - the Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
    3. Down in Mexico - Brinsley Schwarz - Surrender to the Rhythm
    4. You Mean So Much to Me - Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - I Don't Want to Go Home
    5. Evidence - Milt Jackson - Wizard of the Vibes
    6. Any Way You Want It - the Dave Clark Five - Greatest Hits
    7. I Want You - Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
    8. Start Me Up - Rolling Stones - Tattoo You
    9. I Want Her She Wants Me - the Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
10.Hitchin' A Ride - the Explorers Club - The New York Suite
    B. Berkeley Mews - the Kinks - The Kinks Kronikles

  6. I've been digging the new Arcade Fire a bit, but also the new Cults album. Static has gotten fairly middling reviews, but I really like it. It's mostly more of the same 60's-girl group-inspired indie pop that the first captured so well, but if you liked that one, I can't imagine that you wouldn't like this as well.

    1. The Strokes - What Ever Happened? - Room On Fire
    2. Tame Impala - Keep On Lying - Lonerism*
    3. The Strokes - What Ever Happened? - Room On Fire
    4. Skillet - Kill Me, Heal Me - Alien Youth
    5. Sharon Van Etten - Ask - Tramp*
    6. Wavves - Nine is God - Grand Theft Auto V*
    7. Alabama Shakes - Hold On - Alabama Shakes
    8. Tim Hecker - The Piano Drop Ravedeath, 1973
    9. Death Grips - Get Got - The Money Store
    T. The Big Sleep - Ace*

    2. Lonerism would hit my top 5 for 2012 if I redid that list.

    5. Speaking of Ms. Van Etten, the acoustic version of "Serpents" that they played at the end of last Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead was great. I'm going to have to grab that Tramp Acoustic Demos album.

    6. So, every Grand Theft Auto game has a station that I always flip to when I'm in a car. Usually it's a chat line, because they're great. V has Vinewood Radio, though. Can't get enough.

    10. This is a fantastic song.

  7. The Hazards of slowly rebuilding an iPod's contents from scratch:

    1. Merle Haggard “Skid Row” I'm A Lonesome Fugitive
    2. Nine Inch Nails “Heresy” The Downward Spiral
    3. Oneohtrix Point Never “Where Does Time Go” Returnal
    4. Robyn “With Every Heartbeat” Robyn
    5. Dolfish “Grownups” Daytrotter Studio 3/30/2012
    6. Dolfish “All That Keeps Us on the Ground” Dolfish Live
    7. Dolfish “The One Who Burned the Coffee” Dolfish Live
    8. Squarepusher “Kodack” Feed Me Weird Things
    9. Oneohtrix Point Never “Terminator Lake” Drawn And Quartered
    T. Aaron Dilloway “Tremors” Modern Jester
    E. The Field “Burned Out” Looping State Of Mind

  8. AMR, I don't have my 2013 Music list in front of me, but since I know you're a fan of Arvo Part's choral works, I would suggest Caleb Burhans' Evensong. It sounds like sacred music, and it sounds like minimalist music, but it's troubled. I really love it, and it seems like it might be your thing. "Magnificat"

An Inquest Concerning Teeth - Earth - Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method
Strumming for Strings - Charlemagne Palestine - Strumming Music (C. Palestine)
Sister, Do You Know My Name? - The White Stripes - De Stijl
The Noose - A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step
Diesel Power - The Prodigy - Fat of the Land
You Fucking People Make Me Sick - Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
Come Out and Play - The Offspring - Smash
    Sphere - Emptyset - Demiurge
Got the Life - Korn - Follow the Leader
Far Out - Pete Swanson - Man With Potential

Fat of the Land might be the album responsible for the largest proportion of my music collection. I heard it in high school and that started my interest in electronic/techno music, which eventually lead me to drone and minimalism. Certainly no other album was so clear an influence in opening up a genre to me. It was close enough to rock that it was accessible, but different enough to pull me in that direction.

    1. That's interesting, Fat is about as far into techno/electronica as I ever got...oh, and The Chemical Brothers.

      1. My entry was NIN, actually. "March of the Pigs" made me crave rave, ended up with Aphex Twin and Autechre, so my aim was off but it hit something better.
