  1. Since we're discussing injuries...

About two months I suffered a concussion. I'd like to say I was doing something manly like sliding into second base, but I hit my head on a chandelier that I was sitting under. For those of you who have never suffered one, it's incredibly unsettling. Normally when I've hit my head, it just feels like bruising any other part of the body: stings for a minute, then a low throbbing pain endures for a while and whenever you touch it. I knew something was wrong this time about two minutes afterwards. The pain wasn't localized to the spot I hit my head. It was radiating, and I can think of no better way to describe it other than my brain hurt. I know the brain doesn't have pain receptors, but the pain was so much deeper than the layer of skin. Plus, I was instantly dizzy in a way I've never been before, even while drunk. Despite knowing something was wrong, I was in denial about it being a concussion for about an hour. I literally tried to "walk it off." Even walking at a very casual pace made me want to vomit. The only thing that helped was laying perfectly still with my eyes closed.

The next morning, I was feeling better and decided to go to work. The intense pain was gone, and I didn't feel I was so dizzy I couldn't drive. I called the nurse at my clinic just to be sure. She determined from my symptoms that I didn't have a serious brain injury that needed a CT scan, so she told me to go ahead and work. Work was okay. I was able to converse with my clients and problem-solve, but paperwork took me forever as I couldn't concentrate very well, especially looking at a screen. Thursday morning I saw a doctor, who asked me why I didn't come in right away. I had to explain one of her nurses told me not to. Anyway, she made me take the next two days of a work and ordered me to do nothing but lie in bed for four straight days. I was mostly compliant with that.

I was diagnosed with a concussion. She didn't put "mild" in front of it, which was nice, but she also confirmed I didn't have a serious brain injury. She just told me it would take a week to months, or possibly years to recover from it. Anyway, the standard recovery table from a milder concussion is ten days, and it was about ten days out I started feeling better. Symptoms weren't present 24/7, but just when I was moved too quickly or, you know, bumped my head again against stuff. After about a month, I was almost symptom free. Today, I rarely think about it unless I have a twinge of pain and I worry it might be related, even though I got headaches all the time before the concussion.

I was so freaking scared that first week. Will this be permanent? Will my memory or brain functioning get worse? Will this affect my ability to raise my child? Those fears have gone away, but my life could have completely changed because of a freaking chandelier. My son is never playing football. I don't care if I'm the worst father. With all the other opportunities in life, it's just not worth the risk. He's not cheerleading either.

    1. Thanks for sharing that. I don't doubt that it was pretty scary. Glad to hear there appear to be no lasting effects.

    2. I think the takeaway here is that being short is a gift.

Seriously though... I had a concussion in high school. It led, indirectly, to a more serious injury (boiling soup being spilled into my lap). But it was absolutely a doozy (hit by a baseball). I vomited any time I moved the slightest bit. I can only imagine how horrifying it would be to have any lasting symptoms.

      1. I got beaned several times in the helmet and the helmet did its job. Worst beaning I had was in the back. Spine tingled for a few minutes, but no permanent damage.

    3. Agreed with Jeff, thanks for sharing. I'm pretty much (and by pretty much, I mean 100%) completely in agreement with your last couple sentences. I don't remember what kind of lasting effects I've had, but I was concussed back my freshman year in college in a downhill skiing accident (cheaptoy over jump, ski tips kept down, ski tips hit ground first, cheaptoy's face second. I blacked out for an amount of time I am not certain of but I assume 30 seconds to 1 minute. I kept skiing, but I had absolutely no recollection of anything that happened the rest of that night.) I do know that my concentration comes and goes these days and I get near daily headaches (mild, but still there), but I can't say for certain if that's from playing football until my sophomore year plus the skiing accident and various bumps on the noggin or lack of sleep from the youngins, but it does suck.

    4. I was in a car accident in high school and was knocked completely unconscious for at least 20 minutes. I was told that I had a concussion, but no tests were ever performed on me. I stayed in bed for a couple of days and then I was pretty much fine after that, I guess. No recurring headaches or anything. But nothing since then.

      1. these are all great examples of "we really don't know very much about concussion recovery".
        #playyousissies

        1. Mr. Reusse probably feels it's unfair (I know he does) that he's been associated with criticizing Mauer for not playing with a concussion. Let's assume for the sake of argument that he was horribly misunderstood. His #playyousissies hashtag is misogynist. I wonder if he gets that.

      2. I stayed in bed for a couple of days and then I was pretty much fine after that

I wouldn't be surprised if we find out how critical immediate treatment for a concussion is. Like many things it seems that if you don't get the proper rest immediately after the injury, that it takes exponentially longer to recover. It seems like those who get "mild" concussions but don't rest immediately are the ones that have surprisingly long recovery times, like Span after his home-plate collision a couple years ago or Wilkin Ramirez last year. He was trying to convince everyone after the game that he was fine and even tried to fly home with his team but then got sick on the plane and was out for weeks.

    5. I've had two concussions in my life, both of which came from playground accidents when I was under the age of 10. After one of them I was out cold for quite a while and woke up in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. I have extremely fuzzy memories of those events, which isn't surprising given the nature of the injury, but I can't imagine how traumatic they were for my parents.

      1. I've had one. I was eight and got hit in the head with a softball bat (my friend popped a ball up into the air, I was going to catch it, he was going to hit it again). I lost consciousness for a couple of seconds and woke to my mom standing over me going absolutely ballistic. Don't remember much else, except the taste of Bugles (which I was eating both shortly before and after the event) is ruined forever.

        1. My brother had the exact same thing happen. Six inch scar on his forehead from it being split open.

        2. I took out two of my dog's front teeth doing this - can't keep him away from his tennis ball.

I've probably had at least two, though neither were diagnosed: boot hockey and snowboarding - going full speed down the hill, cut left so my back was facing down the slope and caught the back edge - head was the first thing to hit. Came to with people on the lift above me yelling to see if I was okay. Finished the day with the help of a flask of bourbon. Not sure if there's been any long term damage. I have a really poor memory, but not sure it's from the head trauma.

    6. I hit my head on the turf playing football! Touch football when I was like 30, but still. It wasn't as bad as the above, but spots in front of my eyes, nausea, headaches for a few months after, etc.

I used to work with a guy that would get really upset about Morneau's troubles coming back from his concussion. I offered to give him 6 concussions so we could see how quickly he bounced back from the last one... but he declined.

    7. To my knowledge I've only had two concussions. One playing hockey, one playing baseball.

Age 14, I was hit in the head while shagging fly balls (I had my back turned, never even knew a ball was in the air). No blackout, played the game and everything. Started throwing up that night. Didn't realize the two were related until someone mentioned to my dad that I had been hit in the head a few days later. Once the vomiting passed, no lasting symptoms.

Age 16, The hockey one happened in the course of play, I was shoved from behind into the opposing goalie, had a very momentary blackout that probably no one but me noticed, but finished the period taking my regular shift. Got into the locker room between periods and found that I couldn't focus on the coach talking. I would think to myself "This is important, pay attention" and but I just... couldn't. I turned to the kid next to me and asked if my pupils were dilated (the only symptom I really knew for concussions). He said "No, but they're really big". I was taken out of the game, but again never had any lasting symptoms.

      1. If I've had any concussions, they've been sledding.
Once at a Boy Scout winter "cabin-out", I ran headfirst backwards into a stump. I vaguely remember being brought back up the hill to my dad and into the cabin.

The other time it was my own damned fault for trying to sled through the woods.

    1. I presume the woman was asking for it and that, come on man, this sort of thing happens at golf courses all over the country and is no big deal there, yeah?

      1. The Onion really needs to grab this story. Get quotes from golfers that sexism and racism is par for the course!

    2. My Lord, what a complete ass who obviously has gone through his adult(?) life being a major shitheel with no repercussions. You know there are more stories out there like this. I hope they come out and everyone associated with this prick gets smeared with the same bag of crap that this guy wallows in.

      1. The best part of this story is the idiots with the Dolphins rallied behind Incognito and Peter King deigned it a good idea to publish Murtha's "perspective" on his Grantland-wanna-be site. LOL.

        1. Yep! It's really, really gross. I was surprised they read the letter Martin's lawyer released yesterday on the NFL Network. They didn't read the text he got from one of his teammates though that said they were going to "run a train" on his sister. Nothing funnier than joking about killing someone or raping his sister! Boys are gonna be boys I guess.

  2. If you are into sports memorabilia, I can't think of many better pieces to own than this. $1 million? I think $10 million is more like it, especially if the other three are lost.

  3. I wouldn't mind having Johan back.

The Twins are one of several teams that have contacted Johan Santana's agents and asked to look at Santana's medical information, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

    1. Bert excepted, I think it is a bad idea to bring past heroes back in their twilights. Tends to ruin perfectly good fantasy lives about how great they were.

    1. do you think Tyson has read it?

I was expecting something more like a riff on "Good Night Moon".

      1. Read that to Kernel dang-near every night...not sure I'd want a Tyson version mucking up my head.

        1. but it would make a great SNL bit with him reading it.

          Goodnight James, Goodnight Jaco,
          Goodnight Jesse, Marvis and Mitch.
          Goodnight Trevor. Goodnight, Cus.

    1. Uh- that croc was a lot bigger than I thought he was. Also, I totally expected a different ending.

    1. I saw that this morning. I was going to share, but forgot.

Whitlock is pretty hit and miss, but that is as 'hit' as he's ever been. He does an excellent job of cutting through all the fake narratives to the underlying ugliness of the whole thing.

    2. I wonder where the Incognito apologists would draw the line for what is acceptable in an NFL locker room. If Incognito had water-boarded Martin--in the name of toughening him up, obviously--would that have been acceptable? Maybe kidnapping his family--you know, just for a little bit, he'd give them back eventually--maybe that could have given Martin the edge he needed on the field?

    1. Quit spamming us!

It happens sometimes, I'm not sure why. Akismet (the anti-spam comment plugin) says it cleared it, but maybe there was a network hiccup. I just cleared it so you should see it.

  4. apropos of nothing and everything, why do people keep giving platforms to idiots like Damon Bruce, and why would someone like Rob Neyer even consider defending the guy?

    1. I'm not really sure what Neyer has said to defend Bruce, but it's worth mentioning that Neyer has been on his show fairly regularly.

    1. I bought beer for the weekend but no Stout.
      I'm a loser.

But! A 6er of Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale, and a 12er of Schell's Octoberfest. Best Octoberfest I know of, to my tastebuds anyways.

  5. I just received word that after a four-week interview process I'm the top candidate for a great job I really want and that I can expect an official offer on Monday or Tuesday. Salary expectations have been discussed and I can definitely expect a salary. Pending completion of a background check next week I should be starting the new job the following week. Happy days are here again.

      1. On the contrary, I have a backlog of mechanical projects that have been on hold that can now go forward. Brakes for the van, a clutch and tune-up for the pickup, and struts all around for Elder Daughter's Prizm.

    1. You seem pretty confident that the background check won't hold you up...I assume that means they don't know about your affiliation with this place?

      Congrats T.

    2. Good to hear Twayn!

Salary expectations have been discussed and I can definitely expect a salary.
      I chuckled.

  6. Everyone's heard of hockey players missing teeth, but Logan Couture has gone way the other way.

  7. NBBW watching 'Say Yes To The Dress' - show about wedding gowns, Southern brides with tattoos. Howzat? the price is too high??.

    Somebody shoot me.

    1. You just need a concussion so your short-term memory disappears. Find something hard and run headfirst into it.

    1. ok, guess it was for the opening bit.
      but it was funny
and they must have taped a segment for air around Thanksgiving.
