Mexican Matchups: Games of 11/8

Clutch hitting carries Guasave.  A comeback by Hermosillo.  Culiacan has the right Angle.

GUASAVE 3, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN GUASAVE

Los Mochis:  Juan Carlos Gamboa (Mets) was 2-for-4.  Jamie Johnson (Detroit) was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Marco Quevedo pitched 6.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Guasave:  Juan Delgadillo pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Mark Hamilton was 0-for-1 with three walks and a run.

The game:  Saul Soto homered to put Los Mochis up 1-0 in the seventh.  Guasave came back to score all three of its runs in the bottom of the seventh on two-out RBI singles by Baltazar Lopez, Gabriel Gutierrez, and Jesus Lopez.  Los Mochis got one in the eighth and had the tying run in scoring position with none out.

HERMOSILLO 5, MAZATLAN 4 IN HERMOSILLO

Mazatlan:  Oswaldo Morejon was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs.  Henry Mateo was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Alejandro Martinez struck out seven in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks.

Hermosillo:  Jesse Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a with a two-run homer (his sixth) and two runs.  Jerry Owens was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  Back-to-back homers by Morejon and Blake Gailen gave Mazatlan a 3-0 lead in the first, and a Morejon RBI single in the second made it 4-0.  From there, it was all Hermosillo.  Gutierrez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 4-2.  An RBI single by Owens in the seventh made it 4-3.  In the eighth, two-out RBI singles by Heber Gomez and Edgar Quintero gave Hermosillo the lead.  Mazatlan was retired in order in the ninth.

NAVOJOA 5, OBREGON 2 IN NAVOJOA

Obregon:  Carlos Valencia was 3-for-4 with a run.  Dan Robertson (San Diego) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.  Donald Lutz was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Navojoa:  Jon Weber was 4-for-5 with a double and a run.  Wes Bankston was 3-for-4 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in two.  Fernando Flores was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

The game:  Navojoa scored single runs in the second and third.  Obregon came back to tie it with single runs in the fourth and fifth.  In the bottom of the fifth, Flores delivered a two-out two-run single to put Navojoa ahead.  A sacrifice fly produced an insurance run in the sixth.  The last ten Obregon batters were retired.

CULIACAN 9, MEXICALI 2 IN CULIACAN

Mexicali:  Oscar Robles was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Ben Guez (Detroit) was 1-for-3 with two walks.

Culiacan:  Matt Angle was 2-for-4 with a walk and two home runs (his second and third), driving in three.  Sergio Gastelum was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Amauri Sanit struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks.

The game:  It was tied 1-1 after an inning and a half, but the Culiacan took control.  Gastelum hit a two-run homer in the second to make it 3-1, Angle hit his second homer in the fifth to make it 4-1, and a three-run sixth put it away.
