Mexican Matchups: Games of 11/23

Guasave gets all their runs in one inning and its enough.  A Mexicali ninth-inning rally.

GUASAVE 3, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN GUASAVE

Los Mochis:  Gilberto Mejia was 2-for-4 with a run.  Tomas Solis pitched six innings, giving up three unearned runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Guasave:  Leonardo Heras was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Orlando Lara struck out nine in seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.

The game:  Los Mochis scored in the first on a sacrifice fly.  The run held up until the fifth, when Guasave got all three of their scores.  A sacrifice fly scored the first run and RBI singles by Eduardo Arredondo and Heras gave Guasave the lead.  Los Mochis scored one in the ninth and had the tying run on third with one out.

Random:  There was an odd symmetry to the line score.  Los Mochis had a single run on each end and Guasave had all three right in the middle.

MEXICALI 4, CULIACAN 3 IN CULIACAN

Mexicali:  Ben Guez was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run (his second), driving in two.  Chris Roberson was 2-for-4 with two walks and an RBI.  Xorge Carrillo was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Culiacan:  Ricardo Serrano was 3-for-4 with a home run (his second) and two RBIs.  Johan Limonta was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Andres Meza pitches six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  Serrano homered with one out in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and put Culiacan up 3-2.  In the ninth, RBI singles by Roberson and Guez put Mexicali in the lead 4-3.  Culiacan went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

HERMOSILLO 7, NAVOJOA 2 IN NAVOJOA

Hermosillo:  Carlos Gastelum was 3-for-5 with two runs.  Jesse Gutierrez was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Ryan Verdugo (Kansas City) struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks.

Navojoa: Jose Chavez was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Alejandro Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a run.  Eddie Gamboa (Baltimore) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Hermosillo took the lead on an RBI ground out in the first inning and never let go of it.  Navojoa hung in there, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the fifth and 3-2 in the seventh.  Finally, Hermosillo scored two in the eighth and two in the ninth to put it out of reach.  Heber Gomez hit a home run in the eighth and Gutierrez had an RBI single in the ninth.

MAZATLAN 8, OBREGON 3 IN OBREGON

Mazatlan:  Blake Gailen was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, and a home run (his second).  Oswaldo Morejon was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Issmael Salas was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Obregon:  Dan Robertson (San Diego) was 3-for-5 with a double and a run.  Alfredo Amezaga was 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run homer, scoring twice.  Barbaro Canizares was 1-for-2 with three walks.

The game:  Amezaga hit a two-run homer in the first to give Obregon a 2-0 lead.  Mazatlan cut it to 2-1 in the third and took the lead with a four-run fifth.  Morejon had a two-run double and Mike Wilson (Cincinnati) a two-run homer in the inning.  It was 6-3 after six and stayed that way until Mazatlan added two in the ninth.
