On the GBV front, I just picked up this. Four discs, 100 songs of outtakes, unreleased tracks, alternative tracks, etc. They have 2 other releases of 4 discs. 100 songs each that I'm tracking to track down. I can get them used for around $40.00 on Amazon Marketplace but trying to find cheaper. Lots of chaff but the 25-40 keepable songs are absolute gems.

  4. Saw on a billboard in H-Town that Symbol Prince is going to be at Mohegan Sun in late December. I have to go listen to Breakfast Can Wait now.

    *Notes:
    2. Nibbish, check this before you put together your top covers list.
    4. Nibbish, check this and maybe go add it to your 2013 top covers list.
    8. Nibbish, do you ever make best song titles lists? (If so, you should discount obviously "random" titles that have nothing to do with the song. That would not disqualify this song, BTW.)

    1. Heh. No, I just filled in the album info. I still plan on going with the compilation you recommended (hasn't happened yet, provided I get some gift cards, etc. at Christmas, there's a reasonable chance it'll happen).

  7. With a few breaks Cheri Knight could've been big. Real big. Instead her rockin' alt-country sound was limited to two excellent records that are cherished by those that heard them. Last I heard she has a flower farm in Massachusetts. I guess this song kind of laid out her plans.

    1. Instead her rockin' alt-country sound was limited to two excellent records that are cherished by those that heard them.

Wow. Even for this place with it's history of bad puns/wordplay, this is a new low.

        1. If nothing else, I admire your dedication to your craft and willingness to stand behind your work.

    2. Hey Bootsie I picked up that Patty Griffen album Silver Bell you were touting a few weeks back. Yummy!

  8. Did anyone else see the Hold Steady released a cover of, arguably, the best Xmas song there ever was, "Christmas is a time to say I love you"? I think it is only available to those who contributed to their pseudo-kickstarter. Pretty cool and worth checking out.

          1. What about this?
            httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11LbKazCvNk
It's miscredited. Even though it's on a Coil EP, the performance is by Rosa Mundi (which is Coil and Rose McDowall).

    1. I was just saying the other day that I dislike most Christmas songs, but Billy Squier is not one of them.

*Criminy Google Play, I have other albums on here.
**I laughed that this song ripping on Metallica came up after three randomly selected tracks off of a Metallica album Dave Mustaine had a hand in writing.

        1. I'd be interested in seeing yours at some point - some of the lists provoked me to start searching things out and I can guarantee that'd be the case with yours. Plus, your Guest VJ stint was too short to really get us up to speed!

          1. Ok, by popular demand, and only if you use a very liberal definition of both popular and demand, here is my belated desert island twenty:

            1. I still listen to that Blind Guardian song that was from "The Simaralion*" that was on WGOM Videos once in awhile.

*Apologies for the spelling. I'm good and buzzed and not in the mood to spellcheck.

              1. That was a solid entry I made that day. Also, the entire album that song was from, Nightfall in Middle Earth is based on the Silmarillion.

                1. The song was "Nightfall". I don't think this is the right video, but it's the right song. The original post must have been at the previous basement because I couldn't find it on the backend.

    1. What artist did you use to generate this station? This looks like something I could get into from time to time.

      1. It's a mix of about eighteen different genre stations. Basically oldies, country/folk/bluegrass, and big band/swing, although there are probably one or two genres that don't fit any of those categories.

  16. From my Pandora stations:
    1. The Grateful Dead Help On The Way*
    2. Big Boi Thom Pettie*
    3. Imogen Heap Wait It Out*
    4. Grouplove Tongue Tied*
    5. Ramona Falls The Space Between Lightning And Thunder*

    6. Men At Work Down Under*
    7. Young the Giant Cough Syrup
    8. Pearl Jam Betterman*
    9. Fleet Foxes The Cascades*
    10. A-Ha Take On Me

    B. The Avett Brothers Pretty Girl At The Airport

*Song or album is also in my library/disc collection

    1. I haven't listened straight through but I'm not sure I can tell the difference between it and some of his other albums.
Or am I remembering it wrong?

  17. Don't remember who here spun Cast back in the day, b ut I picked up their CD today, along with Joanna Newsom's Ys.

I already know I like the Cast CD, and I figure that picking up Ys will be a good way of forcing myself to finally listen to the whole thing a few times.

    1. Ys needs to be listened to several times in its entirety. It took me about five listens before it finally revealed the magic. And once the genie is out of the bottle, it can't go back.

Also, I don't think this is what she had in mind when she wrote "Monkey and Bear".

      1. i try to start from the beginning with new (to me) artists, so i began with the milk-eyed mender. holy cats, i had to force myself to listen to it, but yeah, around the 5th or so time, ms. newsom really took off for me.
