Australian Audit: Games of 12/14

A tough day for Logan Wade.  A sweep for Perth.

MELBOURNE 3, BRISBANE 2 IN BRISBANE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 0-for-3.

Melbourne:  Ryan Casteel (Oakland) was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Brad Harman was 1-for-2 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  John Hussey (San Diego) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Brisbane:  Brad Dutton was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Joshua Roberts was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Mickey Jannis struck out four in four innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  Melbourne scored three in the first and made it stand up.  The runs scored on an RBI groundout, a run-scoring double by Casteel, and an RBI single by Josh Davies.  Brisbane got single runs in the second and fifth and had the tying run in scoring position with two out in the fifth.

BRISBANE 8, MELBOURNE 3 IN BRISBANE (GAME 2)

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 0-for-4 with an RBI.

Melbourne:  Ryan Casteel (Oakland) was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.  Scott Wearne was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Yasuhiro Tanaka struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and one walk.

Brisbane:  Joey Rickard (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-5 with a home run, his third.  Ryan Battaglia (Cleveland) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Ryan Searle (Cubs) struck out nine in eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk.

The game:  Brisbane took control early with a six-run second.  The inning contained three singles, three doubles, two sacrifice flies, and a Rickard home run.  Melbourne got within 6-3 in the top of the sixth, but Brisbane got two back in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

ADELAIDE 5, SYDNEY 3 IN SYDNEY

Adelaide:  Dylan Child (Pittsburgh) was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, driving in two.  James Baldwin (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.  Richard Olson pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Sydney:  Mitch Dening (Boston) was 2-for-5 with a run.  Zach Shepherd was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double.  Connor Whalen struck out six in six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk.

The game:  Sydney scored two in the first to take a 2-1 lead.  Adelaide tied it in the third on an error and took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Child and a wild pitch.  There was no more scoring until the ninth, when each team tallied once.  Sydney got the tying run up to bat with one out.

PERTH 5, CANBERRA 1 IN PERTH (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Canberra:  Jack Murphy (Toronto) was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Perth:  Jesse Barron was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Tim Kennelly (Philadelphia) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.  Jack Frawley pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

The game:  A two-run double by Barron capped a three-run first that put Perth in control early.  Canberra got one in the fourth, but Perth added single runs in the fourth and fifth to put the game out of reach.

PERTH 10, CANBERRA 4 IN PERTH

Canberra:  Jack Murphy (Toronto) was 1-for-4 with a double.  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 0-for-2 with three walks and a run.

Perth:  George Barber was 2-for-4 with a walk and triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Matt Kennelly (Atlanta) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Anthony Claggett pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk.

The game:  A passed ball and a sacrifice fly put Canberra up 2-0 in the top of the first, but Perth got six in the bottom of the first and the game was not close again.  Perth had the game tied before they got a hit, getting three walks and two hit batsman.  Alex Stuart then hit a bases-clearing double and Barber drove in one with a single.  A two-run second cemented the lead for Perth
