Australian Audit: Games of 12/28

A big day for Logan Wade.  A solid inning for Josh Guyer.  Adelaide needed to watch the Berti.

BRISBANE 9, SYDNEY 2 IN SYDNEY

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 4-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.  Josh Guyer (Sydney) pitched a scoreless inning, giving up no hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Brisbane:  Steven Greer was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Patrick Leonard (Tampa Bay) was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Andrew Aizenstadt struck out five in 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks.

Sydney:  Michael Lysaught was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Trent Schmutter was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring once.  Mitch Dening was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  Lysaught's two-run single in the second put Sydney ahead 2-0.  It was all downhill from there.  David Sutherland's RBI single put Brisbane on the board in the third.  In the fourth, Brisbane took control of the game with a six-run outburst.  RBI singles by Wade and Marcus Bradley tied the score and put Brisbane ahead, respectively.  That was followed by two-run doubles by Leonard and Greer.  Sydney's only real threat to get back into the game came with they loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but a line drive double play ended the inning.

PERTH 4, MELBOURNE 2 IN PERTH

Melbourne:  Jered Schlehuber (Kansas City) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run, his fifth.  Ryan Casteel (Colorado) was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Joe Burns (Texas) pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with six strikeouts.

Perth:  Corey Adamson (San Diego) was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Luke Hughes was 0-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Anthony Claggett struck out seven in seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk.

The game:  Schlehuber hit a two-out homer in the first to put Melbourne on the board.  It stayed 1-0 until the sixth, when an RBI ground out put Melbourne ahead 2-0.  It looked like the lead might hold up, but in the eighth, Adamson singled in a run, Tucker Nathans (Baltimore) had an RBI single to tie it, a bases-loaded walk put Perth ahead, and a sacrifice fly made it 4-2.  Melbourne got a leadoff walk in the ninth but could do nothing with it.

CANBERRA 8, ADELAIDE 5 IN ADELAIDE

Canberra:  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 3-for-4 with a walk, two double, and a triple, scoring three times and driving in three.  Mike Crouse (Toronto) was 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two home runs (his third and fourth).  Ethan Cole struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk.

Adelaide:  Joe Sclafani (Houston) was 2-for-3 with a walk and two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  James Baldwin (Dodgers) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  T. J. Hose pitched five innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Crouse put Canberra on the board in the second with a home run.  The lead went to 2-0 in the third when Berti doubled, stole third, and scored on a ground out.  In the fourth, Canberra scored five times to take a commanding lead.  Crouse led off with another homer, Berti hit a bases-loaded triple, and Casey Frawley singled in Berti.  Canberra scored in the top of the sixth to build the lead to 8-0.   Adelaide got one in the sixth and one in the eighth and threatened to get back into the game with three runs in the ninth.  The three runs scored without a hit, as Canberra reliever Casey Beck issued five walks and uncorked five wild pitches.  Canberra had the bases loaded with two out, but a strikeout ended the game.
