Game 12: Kansas City at Minnesota

The report of my their death was greatly exaggerated.
-Samuel Clemens

A win today gets the Twins a sweep and back to .500. Kevin Correia (0-1) faces off against Jason Vargas (1-0). Another 2nd Inning like yesterday is a good way to go, IMHO.

  1. Through 12 games, the Twins have scored the 2nd most runs in the AL, having focused on upgrading their starting pitching during the offseason. TWINS BASEBALL!!!!

  2. Suzuki catching again. I like that Pinto is batting, but he should be catching more frequently.

      1. If they're going to make a change, I'd like to see them give Escobar a good, long chance, rather than a week or two. Otherwise, you're just shuffling them around, hoping desperately that somebody gets hot.

  3. Did you know: heading into todays game the Twins lead the American League in walks taken?
Also, 3 of the top 4 teams are AL Central teams (Min, Cle, CWS)

  4. I get a kick out of how Dick Bremer apparently believes that home runs are just sort of random, but hitting with two outs is a learned and repeatable skill.

    1. So to practice that, so you have to keep getting a hot or your bp session is over for the day?

  5. Throwing to first must be the hardest thing ever, judging by how often pitchers do it wrong.

    1. Pitchers are generally the ones who throw the ball with the most movement and are taught how to make it move more. Infielders are taught how to throw it straight.

      1. I would be surprised if infielders use a different grip than what pitchers use for a fastball. The reason probably comes down practice.

        1. In a rush, I'm not sure infielders always get their pick of grip, but I think that typically they take more of a 4-seam fastball grip on the ball as opposed to a 2-seam fastball, which seems to generally have more movement. I think you're right that it mainly comes down to practice. Though I think positioning probably has a lot to do with it, too. Anecdotally, it seems lefties have less trouble throwing to first than righties, and infielders don't generally start their throwing motion with their back to first base.

      2. If this is the case, then Mike Pelfrey should be the best pitcher at throwing to first in the league.

  6. Those watching on TV--was there a good reason Plouffe! didn't go for the double play there, or is Dazzle correct that he messed up?

    1. I thought it was a good play since Aoki is hard to double up, its just that Cain made a move to avoid the tag allowing the runners to move up a base.

    2. DicknBert agreed there was little chance of a double play. Dick was disappointed that the out wasn't made soon enough to prevent the runners moving up. Bert said (and I agree, shocker!) that there really wasn't anything else Plouffe could have done because of Cain's superior foot speed.

      1. Wow. DicknBert on one side, Dazzle on the other. I have no idea who I should disagree with now. Can they somehow both be wrong?

  7. Dazz: "Florimon...handles the bat well."

Me: I don't think that word means what you think it means.

    1. Maybe he's a woodworker and has a partner with whom he makes bat. His partner specializes in the barrel and he specializes in the handle, so when it's his turn to go, he handles the bat very well.

At least that's what I thought when I read that.

  8. I would be much less upset at the number of times the Twins bunt if they had some players who were actually good at it.

  9. Am I the only one who gets a little annoyed when they have little kids make the public address announcements? Yeah, I probably am, but I still find it annoying.

  10. This game has the this vibe about it....like a Aaron Hicks triple deck HR for a 1-0 Twins win.

    1. He heard Dick Bremer talking about it earlier in the game (seriously, it was a discussion point in the 5th or so inning)

    2. I'm guessing there was a shift on, in which case I'm all for bunting for a base hit.

  11. Not a huge fan of the pinch-runner here. It may work--I'm not outraged by it--but I'd rather keep Kubel's bat in the lineup at this point.

    1. And it becomes irrelevant, because after the home run, Mastroianni probably would've gone in for defense anyway.

  12. Good thing the Twins called up Tonkin just in time for Nolasco and now Correia pitch deep into the game.

  13. Some interesting throws to first today. Mauer wasn't there but I think I'll boo him anyways.

  14. On the other hand I don't ever remember a batter ever just standing there staring at his own popup.

  15. I was going to say I never seen a game end on interference, but then remember the World Series game from last year.
