  1. I don't mean to keep going on about the Wessington Springs tornado, but if you want to see some pretty awesome tornado footage, you can go here or here or here or here.

  2. I'm back from Omaha. It was my first trip to the College World Series since Warren Morris hit a walk off home run to win it for LSU in 1996. Boy how things have changed in 18 years. The ball was flying out of Rosenblatt back then and I remember thinking college baseball was like a video game back then. This year, I saw three full games - nine runs total.

The coaching strategy seemed to follow that. It was the stuff of Dick Bremer's dreams - I saw more sacrifice bunt attempts than runs. I had the pleasure of sitting by an Ole Miss fan who complained anytime there was a runner on and the team didn't bunt. I'm all for pitchers duels, but man, it seemed like the game strategy was often to avoid scoring runs.

      1. It doesn't quite have the charm of Rosenblatt, but then again Rosenblatt's charm was kind of minor league. As far as the game experience, sightlines were great from both perspectives I had. The food is more affordable than I am used to but not much quality there. I like that they still keep the outfield bleachers general admission. Lots of beach balls in between innings that still cause some game delays, but it makes for a fun atmosphere.

There is still quite a bit of tailgating around the ballpark. I used to like perusing the LSU RV section looking for crawdads. That really doesn't exist anymore. Still, they know how to tailgate in Omaha. I even got to watch the South Korea-Russia match in between games on a television that was mounted on the back of a pickup truck.

        1. shoulda tried to catch Rowsdower while you were there.

I'll see if I can't snap a photo of the stadium from one of the HQ upper floors next week

Heh. I'd always end up with the DQ-like chicken strips.

  3. Paging AMR - so I was visiting with my sister in CA last week and one of our conversations confirmed what I'm sure will come as a surprise to no one here: it's a small world. My sister attended your wedding as a guest of EAR's sister ES (formerly EB?) as they were friends at UMM.

    1. Formerly EP, but EB was her nom de FB.

More small world: Grandma R was born GRK and lived in rural Sebeka as a child.
EAR (who was born in Breckenridge) lived in rural Sebeka as a child (before moving to Glenwood in 7th grade or so), on the same road and about a mile from where her future Grandmother-in-law grew up.

      1. "Most Enjoyable Weddings Ever Attended", I'm sure.
EAR (then EAP) and I had been to just short of a dozen weddings over the 26 months leading up to ours. (We were not engaged for that entire time.)
So we knew what we liked and what we didn't. We focused on making the reception party that we would have had fun at if we'd attended.
The family-member DJ (free!) let the momentum stall out early, but a quick recovery (EAR said "Stop it [Uncle], play the Music we listed!").

        1. Something like that - her words, "I'll always remember their first dance was to Peter Gabriel's song In Your Eyes. They did this really cute dance to it."
Not sure if that's an accurate recollection on her part considering what I 'know' about your current musical tastes, but I can imagine that it was a good time nonetheless.

It came up in much the same way I introduced it, during part of a conversation about watching baseball* and my sister mentioned what a small world it is. She'd known about the WGOM and noticed on FB somewhere along the way the mutual friendships (you, me, her & ES). She thought it was amusing that we go to shows and lunch and ballgames together, but she was the one at your wedding.

          * They're huge Giants & Twins fans. I was at the last regular season Giants game in Candlestick, but have not yet been to AT&T Park. They couldn't believe that and it wasn't remedied last week either.

          1. That's accurate.
Much like our tastes in TV and Movies, I can dig the stuff EAR likes, but she doesn't really dig the stuff I like.
Plus, I wasn't going to ask other people to enjoy themselves at a party with the "my music" of the time (Techno/House/Glitch. Nobukazu Takemura, Porter Ricks/Techno Animal, Funkstörung, Pan Sonic, Autechre.)
I've almost always been a poptimist, and I've been feeling down at the quality of the pop I've been hearing lately.

          1. Huh. I would have liked to have exactly zero of those at my wedding dance.
Not that they would be bad, just that they would not be me.
I might have had some Mingus. I definitely had Moloko.
The Free Family DJ burnt all of the songs he used to CD (before the event: he just played his CDs and skipped around as neccesary). So that (plus the free DJing) was our gift from him.
The "why are you playing this?" songs are on there.

        2. Our dips*&t DJ showed up to the wedding without our first dance song, which we'd listed for him months prior. A hidden gem that he couldn't find? Nope, Etta James's "At Last," one of the most cliche first dance songs ever, so he had no excuse.

Milkmom's good friend had it at home about five blocks away. We thank her every time we run into her.

  4. looking at the b-r pitching leaders page, I see that Hughes (2.5) and Gibson (2.4) are 9 and 10 in the AL in the Pitchers WAR category
