Minor Details: Games of July 12

A near-sweep for the Twins!  Aaron Hicks has a big day.  Alex Swim continues to hit.

ROCHESTER 5, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Dan Rohlfing was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his second) and a walk.  Chris Rahl was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Eric Farris was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Sean Gilmartin pitched 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Ryan Pressly struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Nic Turley pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Robert Refsnyder was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Taylor Dugas was 2-for-4 with a run.

The game:  Deibinson Romero doubled in Farris in the first to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.  Dan Fiorito's RBI double in the fifth tied it at one.  S/W-B took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Carmen Angelini.  The Red Wings took control with a four-run eighth.  The tying run scored on a wild pitch, Rahl doubled in the go-ahead run, and Rohlfing provided the insurance with a two-run homer.  The RailRiders got a single in the ninth but did not get the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Romero was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.

NEW BRITAIN 6, READING 5 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Kyle Knudson was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Ex-Twin Matt Tolbert was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Albert Cartwright was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Kelly Dugan was 2-for-5 with a run.

The game:  Reading led early, as Tolbert's two-run double led to a three-run second and a 3-0 lead for the Fightin Phils.  Aaron Altherr singled in a run in the third to make it 4-0.  New Britain started its comeback in the bottom of the third when Mike Kvasnicka homered and Eddie Rosario doubled in Hicks to make it 4-2.  It was 4-3 after four.  In the sixth, RBI singles by Knudson and Hicks and a bases-loaded walk gave the Rock Cats a 6-4 lead.  Reading got one back in the eighth.  They had the tying run on third with two out in that inning and had two on with two out in the ninth, but could not tie it up.

Of note:  Kvasnicka was 1-for-5 with a home run, his eighth.  Rosario was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Taylor Rogers pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

DUNEDIN AT FORT MYERS

Rained out.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, CLINTON 1 IN CLINTON (7 INNINGS--RAIN)

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his eighth.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Aaron Slegers pitched a complete game, striking out seven in seven innings while giving up one run on two hits and a walk.

Opposition star:  Justin Seager was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.

The game:  Seager homered in the second to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.  An error led to two Cedar Rapids runs in the third.  Kanzler hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-1.  The Kernels added their last run in the sixth.  Seager's homer was the only LumberKings hit until the seventh, when Jack Reinheimer singled.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 2-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-3 with an RBI.

ELIZABETHTON 7, DANVILLE 1 IN DANVILLE

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Derrick Penilla pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.  Josue Montanez struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Keaton Steele pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Codey McElroy was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Tanner Murphy was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.  Tyler Vail struck out four in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

The game:  Trey Vavra homered in the second to give Elizabethton a 1-0 lead, but McElroy tripled and scored in the bottom of the second to tie it at one.  The Twins then took control with a six-run third.  They opened the inning with five consecutive singles that produced three runs.  The next two batters went out, leading to one more run.  Doubles by Tyler Mautner and Alex Real brought home two more.  Danville put two men on in the third, sixth, and ninth, but did not score again.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Tyler Kuresa was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

GCL RED SOX 9, GCL TWINS 2 AT RED SOX

Batting star:  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching star:  Alexis Tapia struck out six in five innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Rafael Devers was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a double, driving in three.  Joseph Monge was 2-for-4 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring three times and driving in one.  Javier Guerra was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first.  The Twins scored the tying run in the fourth on a balk and scored on a ground out in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.  The Red Sox got the lead back with three in the sixth and took control of the game with a five-run seventh.  Devers' two-run homer in the sixth put the Red Sox ahead.

Of note:  Zack Larson was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-4.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL PADRES 6 AT PADRES

Batting stars:  Francisco Hernandez was 4-for-5 with three runs.  Luis Arraez was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Johan Quezada struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Randolph Perez struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Manuel Vizcaino was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk, scoring twice.  Aurelio Perez was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

The game:  Four consecutive two-out singles led to three Twins runs in the third.  The Padres used three singles and three walks to tie it in the fifth.  In the seventh, a Roni Tapia two-run double capped a four-run inning that left the Twins ahead 7-3.  An error led to two more Twins runs in the eighth.  Vizcaino hit a two-run homer in a three-run Padres ninth, but the Padres did not bring the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs.  Antonio Tovar was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4.  Starter Williams Ramirez struck out ten in four innings, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks.

  1. Rookie-level Elizabethton first baseman Trey Vavra, son of Twins third-base coach Joe Vavra, hit his first professional homer on Saturday in Danville, Va. The ball couldn’t be retrieved, his dad said, because “he hit it in the woods.”

      1. You must not have heard the recent radio spot about T.C. - he don't like the woods.
