Minor Details: Games of August 3

Dan Rohlfing makes his pitching debut and gets a save.  A late rally falls short for Fort Myers.  Felix Jorge pitches well in a loss.

ROCHESTER 6, LOUISVILLE 5 IN LOUISVILLE (15 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 4-for-7 with two doubles and two runs.  James Beresford was 3-for-8 with a run.  Doug Bernier was -for-6 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Alex Meyer struck out eight in 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks.  Lester Oliveros struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  Aaron Thompson retired all five batters he faced.

Opposition stars:  Thomas Neal was 4-for-6 with a double and two walks, driving in two.  Rey Navarro was 3-for-5 with three walks and two runs.

The game:  Doubles by Ortiz and Reynaldo Rodriguez led to a two-run fourth and a 3-0 Rochester lead.  Ortiz doubled and scored in the sixth to make it 4-0.  In the bottom of the sixth, however, Louisville got a single and two walks to load the bases, scored one on a wild pitch, and Neal doubled home two more to cut the lead to 4-3.  In the eighth, four singles and a sacrifice fly produced two Bats runs and put them ahead 5-4.  In the ninth, the Red Wings got three consecutive one-out singles, the last by Wilkin Ramirez, to tie the score.  In the fifteenth, Bernier singled and scored on a Pedro Florimon triple to give Rochester a 6-5 lead.  The Red Wings had run out of pitchers, however, so catcher Dan Rohlfing came in to pitch.  He got a ground out, gave up a one-out single, and then retired the final two batters n popups to second base to get the save.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-8 with a run.  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-7.  Ramirez was 1-for-6 with a walk and an RBI.  Florimon was 2-for-7 with a triple and an RBI.  Rochester had 18 hits but stranded 14 runners.

ERIE 7, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Brandon Waring was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Tony Thomas was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching star:  Starter Daniel Turpen struck out three in three innings, giving up one run on one hit and four walks.

Opposition stars:  Josh Turley pitched seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Steven Moya was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his twenty-eighth) and a walk, scoring three times.  Corey Jones was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fifth) and three RBIs.

The game:  Erie scored one in the second and it remained 1-0 through five.  In the sixth, three consecutive one-out singles were followed by a pair of two-out walks to make it 3-0.  A pair of doubles made it 4-0 through seven.  In the ninth, Moya hit a two-run homer and Jones hit a solo shot to make it 7-0.  Eddie Rosario singled in a run in the ninth to avoid the shutout.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4.  Rosario was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Mike Kvasnicka was 0-for-4.

LAKELAND 7, FORT MYERS 4 IN LAKELAND

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Steven Gruver pitched five innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Kenton St. John pitched six shutout innings, allowing eight hits and one walk with no strikeouts.  Curt Powell was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Connor Harrell was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his eleventh) and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  Chad Wright singled in a run in the third to put Lakeland up 1-0.  Harrell hit a two-run homer in the sixth and the Flying Tigers added four more in the seventh.  Powell had a two-run triple in the seventh and Austin Green added a two-run single.  Fort Myers did not get on the board until the ninth.  Grimes doubled in two, Aderlin Mejia had an RBI single, and another run scored on a passed ball.  The Miracle brought the tying run up to bat with two out, but a fly ball ended the game.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 2-for-5.  Byron Buxton was 0-for-5.

BELOIT 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Michael Quesada was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.

Pitching star:  Hudson Boyd pitched one inning, giving up an unearned run on one hit.

Opposition stars:  Matt Stalcup struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks.  Michael Soto was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.

The game:  Doubles by Luis Baez and Soto put Beloit ahead 1-0 in the second.  Logan Wade homered in the third to tie it at one.  In the fourth, a two-out error let in one run and was followed by Soto's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Justin Higley to put the Snappers up 4-1.  An error and a wild pitch made it 5-1 after six.  In the eighth, Max Murphy singled in one and Quesada doubled in two to get Cedar Rapids back into the game at 5-4.  The Kernels got the go-ahead run on base with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.  Beloit got an insurance run in the ninth and Cedar Rapids then went down in order to end the game.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 1-for-4 with a walk and a double.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Murphy was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Starter Stephen Gonsalves struck out five in five innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

JOHNSON CITY 2, ELIZABETHTON 0 IN ELIZABETHTON (7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Blake Schmit was 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.

Pitching star:  Felix Jorge pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars;  Julio Mateo pitched five innings, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Cole Lankford was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run.

The game:  A wild pitch brought home a Johnson City run in the third.  Lankford tripled and scored in the fifth.  Elizabethton put men on first and second with one out in the first and loaded the bases with two out in the fifth.  Neither team had a hit with a man in scoring position.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-4.  Tanner English was 0-for-1 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-3.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-3.

  1. My brother and his wife were at the Red Wings game in Louisville. They live not far from there and her nephew is Tucker Barnhart, the catcher for Louisville. He was giving me updates from the game. They stayed for the entire game. He said Rohlfing's parents were sitting at the other end of their row.

    1. Cool. It would've been wonderful to have been able to watch Mom and Dad Rohlfing's reactions in the bottom of the fifteenth.

    2. From my brother on Meyer and his wife's nephew, Tucker Barnhart:

      Alex and Tucker played on the same select team in high school. Back then Alex was wild on his pitching. Because of that it helped show off Tucker's defense behind the plate and helped him get noticed by scouts.
