Fall Festival: Games of October 20

Appel polishes off the Peoria batters.  A walkoff pickoff in Mesa.  Scotts wins the battle of the dales.

SALT RIVER 4, PEORIA 2 IN SALT RIVER

Twins:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jake Reed pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Zack Jones pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Peoria:  Mark Appel (Houston) pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

Salt River:  Francisco Lindor (Cleveland) was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Grant Sides (Cleveland) pitched two shutout innings, allowing only a walk with one strikeout.

The game:  A throwing error produced two runs on no hits for Salt River in the first.  Peoria closed to within 3-2 after six, but Ryan Casteel (Colorado) doubled and scored in the eighth to provide an insurance run.

SURPRISE 6, MESA 5 IN MESA

Surprise:  Nick Williams (Texas) was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a double, scoring twice.  Michael De Leon (Texas) was 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Robby Scott (Boston) pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Mesa:  Kaleb Cowart (Angels) was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Chad Hinshaw (Angels) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Mark Sappington (Angels) struck out two in a scoreless inning, allowing no hits and no walks.

The game:  RBI singles by Kyle Waldrop (Cincinnati) and Patrick Kivlehan (Seattle) put Surprise up 4-3 in the fifth.  Williams hit a two-run homer to make it 6-3 in the sixth.  Mesa closed to 6-5 and had the tying run on second with two out in the ninth, but the runner was picked off base to end the game.

SCOTTSDALE 7, GLENDALE 3 IN SCOTTSDALE

Glendale:  Tim Anderson (White Sox) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Mike Ohlman (Baltimore) was 2-for-4 with a run.  Chris Bassitt (White Sox) struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

Scottsdale:  Elias Diaz (Pittsburgh) was 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  L. J. Mazzilli (Mets) was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice.  Joely Rodriguez (Pittsburgh) struck out five in four shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk.

The game:  Scottsdale built a 5-0 lead after four, but Glendale cut it to 5-3 after six.  Dan Gamache's (Pittsburgh) RBI double in the seventh and Aaron Judge's (Yankees) run-scoring single in the eighth provided a pair of insurance runs for Scottsdale.
