Mexican Matchups: Games of October 31

Corey Wimberly leads Obregon to victory.  A good day for Eric Farris, too.  Pitchers' duels in Los Mochis and Mexicali.

OBREGON 3, NAVOJOA 2 IN OBREGON

Twins:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-4 with a run for Obregon.

Navojoa:  Chris Marrero (Baltimore) was 2-for-4 with two home runs, his fourth and fifth.  Irving Jimenez struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two walks.

Obregon:  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  Said Gutierrez was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Arturo Lopez pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  Lutz hit a two-run homer in the first to put Obregon up 2-0.  Marrero hit solo homers in the second and sixth to tie it at two.  In the bottom of the second, Wimberly singled leading off the bottom of the sixth, took second on a Lutz single, then scored on a stolen base-plus-error for what turned out to be the winning run.

CULIACAN 8, HERMOSILLO 1 IN CULIACAN

Twins:  Eric Farris was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Jerry Owens was 2-for-4.  Jesus Castillo pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Culiacan:  Jorge Vazquez was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Arturo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his third) and a walk.  Jorge Reyes (Atlanta) pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  A single and two doubles put Culiacan up 2-0 in the first.  They led 5-0 after four, 5-1 after six, and scored three in the seventh to put the game away.

JALISCO 1, LOS MOCHIS 0 IN LOS MOCHIS

Jalisco:  Eduardo Arredondo was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Gabriel Gutierrez was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Marco Tovar struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up six hits and a walk.

Los Mochis:  Luis Niebla (Yankees) pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Gutierrez led off the sixth with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly for the game's only run.  Los Mochis led off both the sixth and the seventh with a pair of singles, but could not score either time.

MAZATLAN 2, MEXICALI 1 IN MEXICALI

Mazatlan:  Jesus Castillo was 3-for-4 with a run.  Erick Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Alejandro Martinez struck out five in 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.

Mexicali:  Ricardo Serrano was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Dave Sappelt was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Marco Antonio Duarte pitched six shutout innings, allowing seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Rodriguez drove in two runs on a popup infield single in the top of the seventh.  Mexicali got one back in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third with one out.
