Mexican Matchups: Games of November 8

Maxwell was smart enough to drive in the winning run for Culiacan.  Obregon trails and has a comeback fall short.  Three close games and a blowout.

CULIACAN 3, MAZATLAN 2 IN MAZATLAN

Culiacan:  Maxwell Leon was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Rico Noel (San Diego) was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Robert Coello (Baltimore) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Mazatlan:  Derrick Robinson (Cincinnati) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Francisco Villa (Dodgers) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Robinson's two-run single put Mazatlan up 2-1 in the fifth, but Leon doubled home two in the seventh to give Culiacan a 3-2 lead.  Mazatlan got the tying run to third with two out in the ninth.

HERMOSILLO 3, OBREGON 2 IN OBREGON

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Adan Munoz was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jesse Estrada pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Obregon:  Donell Linares was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Christian Villanueva (Cubs) was 2-for-3 with a double.  Jorge Castillo pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Obregon trailed 3-0 going to the bottom of the ninth but got two in and had men on first and third before being retired.

JALISCO 4, MEXICALI 3 IN MEXICALI

Jalisco:  Cory Vaughn (Mets) was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.  Jose Manuel Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Luis Ivan Rodriguez pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Mexicali:  John Del Campo was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Walter Ibarra (Arizona) was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Edgar Gomez (Tampa Bay) pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.

The game:  Mexicali led 3-1 after three, but Jalisco tied it on RBI doubles by Japhet Amador and Vaughn in the fifth.  In the seventh, Rodriguez singled, stole second, and scored on a Vaughn single for the go-ahead run.

LOS MOCHIS 9, NAVOJOA 2 IN LOS MOCHIS

Navojoa:  Jose Guadalupe Chavez was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk, driving in two.  Reggie Abercrombie was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Eddie Gamboa (Baltimore) struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.

Los Mochis:  Juan Carlos Gamboa was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a double, scoring twice.  Antonio Lamas was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Tomas Solis pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was tied 2-2 after five, but Los Mochis got one in the sixth, Gamboa hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and Rodolfo Amador hit a three-run homer in a four-run eighth that put the game out of reach.
