April 23, 2015: Roar

The Milklings both auditioned for the talent show in their school yesterday. One won't make it. The other might, but the signup sheet was VERY long. At any rate, they're learning that having the cojones to try is a big part of the battle.

  1. My daughter's softball team has had three games. They've had two concussions and one fractured cheek bone. Down to eight players for tonight's game. It hasn't gone well.

      1. My daughter got concussed when she got knocked backwards by a hard tag.

The broken cheek bone was from a girl trying to catch a fly ball on a very windy day.

Not sure what happened with the latest one.

  2. RPZ and I played our cribbage match last night. RPZ got off to a hot start, with two 20 point hands to begin game 1. Strangely enough, that was the only game I came back to win. He thoroughly dominated games 2 and 3, though never managed a skunk. I think I led for 2 hands the entire night, and they were the last two of game 1. Watch out for RPZ, whoever is next. He's dangerous.

    1. Thanks for posting and for playing. I had some crazy hands, but what really got me was the cuts. A bunch of times, that's what really pushed the point totals up. I definitely recommend Cribbage pro!

                1. I couldn't get Cribbage Pro to function on iPhone or laptop. I'm not sure what the problem was.

  3. It has been a rough couple of months for me. There have been so many big things happening, that I have had to make many short trips to ND. Normally, I like to go for about a week at a time and be home for a week. That requires staying over a weekend. But, I've had to be home almost every weekend. Normally, I drive about 2600 miles a month (I keep track). In March, it was 3,500. In April, it will be about 3,800. Man, I'm weary.

    1. I do a lot of driving, but nowhere near that much. Hang in there. Be sure to pull over if you get too tired.

    2. I've put 20,000 plus miles on since switching jobs in August. What happened to the BKaC map? Without referencing it , I've been to New Philoland, DGville, and AMRtown as part of the job, but not yet to Spamtown.

          1. Well sure, if you want to do it the easy way.

I spent a bit looking for it, but didn't see it, so I figured it'd gotten swept away when my maps went away the first time.

  4. Not wishing ill on the Wild, but that was a classic Minnesota sports team performance last night. I was watching and my daughter said, why are you watching hockey? Third goal goes in and I said, let's watch some basketball.

      1. I saw the pilot of "The Americans" and really liked it, but the only place I know to legally stream it is Amazon prime video, which I don't have. I should check the library.

          1. That Tusk scene was insanely awesome. There was another really good scene at to Fleetwood Mac this season.

  5. I know it's fleeting, but the MN Twins and LA Angels of A have the same record.
    Suck it Scioscia!

There are only 7 teams in the AL more than a game ahead of the Twins, and 9 in the NL.

  6. It's been a month since I started my new job. It continues to go very well.

I'm trying to decide if it's impressive or really really lame that I wrote a memo so good* that I've been congratulated by several departments and informally offered a steak dinner as a reward.

*I say good because of what the memo accomplished (or, rather, illegal stuff it prevented), not because I wrote it well.

    1. I'd say it means you impressed them because they're used to lame? I understand the feeling. Did you informally accept the steak?

            1. Criminy, Pepper! I almost laughed out loud in this meeting I'm not paying attention to.

  7. Attention WSK aficionados: chef Sameh Wadi has come out with a cookbook. (He's also the chef at Saffron, and I don't get the sense that the book itself is particularly WSK focused. But I would think that if you like the flavor combos of that food, the cookbook would have similar appeal.)

Secondly, the tofu yum-yum rice bowl recipe has now been tested and thoroughly enjoyed in my home. (The marinade for the tofu is pretty spicy, so we Mr. NaCl fried a separate batch of plain tofu for the boys.)

    1. Nonsense, the Twins still need to bring him back once he's proven to be completely washed up.

    2. At least he ended it well. A one out, strikeout save. His 2015 season will indicate he struck out 27 batters per 9 innings.

      1. Like what if Zumaya had that his one pitch for the Twins in the regular season rather than spring training?
        Average fastball velocity by season:
        2007 97.2
        2008 97.8
        2009 99.1
        2010 99.2
        2011 injured
        2012 102.2

  8. Rochester was postponed. For Cedar Rapids, Stephen Gonsalves was tremendous, striking out eleven in seven shutout innings. The only hit he gave up was an infield single, and he had only one walk. The Kernels won 3-0, with Zach Granite scoring two of the three runs.

    1. It wasn't just an infield single, it was a bunt single with one out in the fourth inning to break up a perfect game after six of the previous seven batters had struck out. Gonsalves only threw 90 pitches in 7 innings, so I imagine he would have been allowed to go for the no-no if it was still intact after 7.

I'm really excited about the less-known pitching prospects doing well for the Twins, especially Gonsalves (0.90 ERA), Chi-Wei Hu, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey and Felix Jorge. All of these guys are averaging at least 9Ks per 9 and ERAs under 3.00.

        1. Hu pitched really well tonight, too. Six innings, one run, five hits, no walks, four strikeouts.

  9. Tonight's desert after grilled swordfish. It's quite a bit sweeter then I was expecting. I think it'll get better as it washes the leinies big butt off my palate.

  10. Didn't really enjoy the Valet's projectile vomit (sort of like the fake vomit stream used in SNL sketches) during dinner with a guest tonight.
