BUFFALO 6, ROCHESTER 5 IN BUFFALO
Batting stars: Kennys Vargas was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, driving in two. Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three. Byron Buxton was 3-for-5 with two runs.
Pitching star: Alex Meyer pitched three innings, giving up one run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Andy Burns was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, driving in four. Dalton Pompey was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs. Randy Wolf struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk.
The game: Alex Hassan singled in a run in the first and Burns doubled in two in the third to give the Bisons a 3-0 lead. Vargas got the Red Wings on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, but the Bisons got two in the bottom of the fifth on Burns' two-rum homer to make it 5-1. It was 6-1 going to the ninth. The Red Wings then put together a rally, as Rodriguez hit a three-run triple and scored on Vargas' single to make it 6-5. They got the tying run to second with two out, but pinch-runner Eric Farris was thrown out at the plate on a James Beresford single to end the game.
Of note: Xavier Avery was 1-for-5. Taylor Rogers pitched five innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and two walks with one strikeout.
TENNESSEE 4, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN CHATTANOOGA (13 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one. Levi Michael was 0-for-3 with three walks and a run. Stephen Wickens was 2-for-6.
Pitching stars: Greg Peavey pitched eight innings, giving up two runs on two hits and no walks with three strikeouts. D. J. Johnson struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up one hit. J. T. Chargois pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars: Billy McKinney was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk, driving in three. Felix Pena pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Fernando Cruz pitched three shutout innings, allowing three walks with one strikeout.
The game: McKinney doubled in a run in the third and Kepler doubled one home in the sixth to make it 1-1. Jacob Rogers homered in the seventh, but the Lookouts got a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 2-2. The Lookouts loaded the bases with two out in the ninth but failed to score. The Smokies loaded the bases with two out in the thirteenth and did not fail, as McKinney delivered a two-run single. The Lookouts went down in order in the bottom of the thirteenth.
Of note: D. J. Hicks was 1-for-6. Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-5 with an RBI.
FORT MYERS 1, ST. LUCIE 0 IN ST. LUCIE
Batting star: Ryan Walker was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.
Pitching stars: Kohl Stewart pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Corey Williams retired all four men he faced, striking out two. Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Colton Plaia was 2-for-2 with a double. Stefan Sabol was 2-for-4. Kevin McGowan pitched seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with no strikeouts.
The game: The game's lone run came in the fifth when Walker tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Mets nearly tied it in the bottom of the fifth, but Plaia was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single. The Mets also got a man to third with two out in the ninth.
Of note: Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4. Zach Granite was 0-for-4. Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4. Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4.
LAKE COUNTY 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN LAKE COUNTY
Batting stars: Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. T. J. White was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one. Austin Diemer was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Pitching star: Felix Jorge struck out six in six innings, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. He allowed only one baserunner after the first inning.
Opposition stars: Anthony Santander was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his third) and two runs. Taylor Murphy was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. Bobby Bradley was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his twenty-first.
The game: The Kernels got one in the first, but Bradley hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Captains a 3-1 lead. White doubled home a run in the third and the Kernels scored one in the eighth to tie it 3-3, but in the bottom of the eighth, Murphy singled in a run and Santander hit a two-run homer to make it 6-3 Captains. The Kernels went down in order in the ninth.
Of note: Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a walk. Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4 with a walk.
GREENEVILLE 4, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN ELIZABETHTON
Batting stars: A. J. Murray was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run. Travis Blankenhorn was 1-for-3. The Twins had only one hit.
Pitching star: Samuel Clay pitched seven innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Myles Straw was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs. Connor Goedert was 2-for-4 with a double. Diogenes Almengo struck out five in five shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.
The game: Errors helped the Astros score single runs in the third and sixth to go ahead 2-0. The Twins' lone hit came in the second, a one-out single by Blankenhorn. The Twins had men on second and third with one out in that inning, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning. The Twins got on the board in the seventh on a walk, an error, and a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1, but the Astros scored once in the eighth and once in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Of note: Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4. Kamran Young was 0-for-4. LaMonte Wade was 0-for-3 with a walk.
GCL TWINS 5, GCL TWINS 2 AT RAYS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Robert Molina was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Ruar Verkerk was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Kolton Kendrick was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
Pitching stars: Williams Ramirez struck out four in 4.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and a walk. Hector Lujan pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Oscar Rojas was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Blake Grant-Parks was 1-for-3 with a run.
The game: Christian Cavaness doubled in two runs in the second to give the Twins a 2-0 lead. An error helped the Rays score two in the fifth to tie it 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Molina and Verkerk had RBI singles and Roni Tapia brought home a run with a single-plus-error to give the Twins a 5-2 lead. The Rays did not get a man on base after that.
Of note: Cavaness was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a double. Josmil Pinto was 1-for-2 with a double.
GCL RAYS 1, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS (GAME 2--9 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)
Batting stars: Christian Cavaness was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Trey Cabbage was 2-for-4.
Pitching stars: Max Cordy struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks. Brandon Poulson struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and three walks. Johan Quezada pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two walks.
Opposition stars: Miguel Hernandez was 1-for-4 with a home run. Reign Letkeman pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks. Edrick Agosto struck out four in 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
The game: Not only was there no scoring for eight and a half innings, there were not a lot of threats. The Twins had only four at-bats with men in scoring position and the Rays had only three. Hernandez hit a walkoff home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
