Minor Details: Games of September 3

A late rally falls short for the Red Wings.  Not much hitting for the Lookouts.  Zach Granite and Chad Christensen lead the Miracle.  Nick Gordon gets a couple of hits for the Kernels.

PAWTUCKET 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a home run (his sixteenth) and a walk, scoring twice.  James Beresford was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Aaron Thompson pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jonathan Roof was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Deven Marrero was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Humberto Quintero was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  Three singles and an error enabled the Red Sox to tie the score 2-2 in the fifth.  Roof hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Quintero singled in a run in the seventh to put the Red Sox in front 5-2.  Doug Bernier and Beresford each had an RBI single in the ninth to cut the lead to 5-4.  The Red Wings had men on first and second with one out, but a pair of fly outs ended the game.

Of note:  Jose Martinez was 1-for-5.  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-3 with a walk.

JACKSON 5, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Johnson retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Stephen Landazuri pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Jordy Lara was 2-for-5 with a home run (his seventh) and two runs.  Ian Miller was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

The game:  Lara homered in the second to put the Generals up 1-0 and Aderlin Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 3-0.  Kepler tripled in a run in the seventh and a run scored on a ground out in the eighth to cut the lead to 3-2, but the tying run was stranded on third base.  Miller doubled in two runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-2.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  D. J. Hicks was 0-for-4.  Jason Wheeler struck out six in 5.2 innings but gave up three runs on four hits and three walks.

FORT MYERS 9, CHARLOTTE 5 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 3-for-3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Chad Christensen was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Jay pitched a scoreless inning, giving up only a walk.  Todd Van Steensel pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Hector Guevera was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Braxton Lee was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Justin Williams was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  Guevera's two-run single capped a four-run inning that put the Stone Crabs ahead 2-0 in the second.  The Miracle came back with a four-run inning of their own in the third, which included a three-run triple by Haar.  An error allowed the Stone Crabs to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but the Miracle scored three in the sixth to go in front to stay and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on Granite's two-run single to take control of the game.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-5 with a run.  Logan Wade was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Mat Batts pitched six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

WISCONSIN 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4.  Chris Paul was 1-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Luke Bard pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.  Nick Anderson pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Zach Cooper struck out five in three shutout innings, allowing one hit.  Josh Uhen pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Luis Aviles was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double, scoring twice.

The game:  The Timber Rattlers scored three in the third and one in the fifth.  The Kernels' biggest threat came in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with one out.  A strikeout and a popup ended the threat.

Of note:   Sean Miller was 0-for-5.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Max Murphy was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Michael Theofanopoulos, normally a reliever, pitched well for two innings before running into trouble in the third.  His line was three innings, three runs, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts.
