December 13, 2015: Quiet Santa

My son got to meet Santa yesterday in a low sensory environment. Two families, no music, no lines. Santa didn't ho-ho-ho or laugh loudly. He asked my son what he wanted. My son said, "Read books!"

  1. It's been a rough Hanukkah season around here. My FiL was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia a few weeks ago. He enrolled in an experimental treatment program at the University of Colorado at Denver and went through his first round of treatment, was sent home to New Mexico, and ended up back in the hospital with an infection. That led to an early return to Denver for a higher level of care and more assessment. Recently, he made the decision to withdraw from the program and go home to start palliative care. The Mrs. leaves this morning to spend the next three weeks at home (having previously spent a week driving them to Denver and staying with her mom through the bulk of the first treatment -- her college roommate is one of the principals in the program).

We all gotta go some day. That fact doesn't make it any easier when "the day" starts staring you in the face for someone you love.

cc to Rhu: FiL is a big Cardinals fan. Are you aware of any decent videos available for sale of the Stan Musial-era Cardinals? I'd like to hunt one down for him.

    1. Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I know you're not a believer, but I hope you won't mind if I put him and the family in my prayers anyway. Best wishes to all of you.

      1. I never mind when people wish me and mine well in their own way.

Thanks, Padre, and all. This is the sort of thing that, weirdly, is easier to share here than in much of my non-virtual life.

    2. Best wishes for your family. I think that's a really thoughtful idea you had with the Cardinals memories.

  2. I can't believe it took me until this morning to connect the dots. Is the NFL just trolling all of us with their re-write of this song for their Sunday Night Football theme?

btw, Stick is allowed to enjoy this song, because Mick Taylor played the solo on the original studio recording back in 1988.
