    1. Indeed ... but against that offensive flow, even the best defenders can look pedestrian at best (and Lub-like at worst).

      1. Also it should be noted that Love currently has a respectable 99 drtg and is 16th among PFs in DRPM, so its not like he really fits the "Kevin Love is terrible at defense" narrative.

          1. 'Twas, twas. I just have this knee-jerk reaction to defending his defense.

(also, holy crap Rubio! He's the DRPM leader for PG's and its not even remotely close.)

            1. And they won! In blow-out fashion no less! Both teams - Suns & TWolves - had lost 13 of 14, but Mitchell suggested he'd seen improvement that simply hadn't translated into W's (hard to do against the likes of OKC, Cleveland, Dallas and even Houston ... but you figure they'd have snuck a win outta Denver, Mil or the Sixers).

"They were struggling, we were struggling," Wiggins said. "They probably came in here thinking they were going to beat us. So I wanted to win. We lost a lot straight.* I just wanted a win, man."

Another winnable match tonight against NOLA...based purely on W-L's anyway.

              * 9 in a row before Sunday's win, coupled with a 4-12 December ... for guys used to competing & winning at every level, this had to be a gut check, eh?

              1. I watched the NOLA-MEM game yesterday (League Pass is free through the 25th, btw) and it was fairly hard fought, so hopefully the Pelicans are gassed this evening.

                  1. Lame. The Wolves game is on NBA TV so it isn't available on League Pass, so I'm stuck slogging through Bucks-Heat.

        1. I am not the world's closest NBA observer by any stretch, but Love seems to be someone where the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Kind of an anti-Battier. I know he got Timberwolved in Minnesota, so it's hard to say what he really contributed there, and now in Cleveland it's sort of the opposite problem where I'd say it's hard to say how much of the success is LeBron.

          1. I think he's just a bad fit with LeBron.

They are using him mostly as a spot-up perimeter shooter. Dirk he ain't. He's a career 36.3 pct shooter from 3pt range (and right on that percentage this season). That is decent, but not exactly inspiring. Unfortunately for the Cavs, they don't have much choice. LeBron and Kyrie are both ball dominators probably best suited to pick-and-roll, which requires floor spacing, and K-Lub doesn't seem to be particularly good as a roll guy.

With Minnesota, about half of Love's FGA were from within 10 feet (35 pct from within 3 ft, 19 pct from 3-10 ft). With Cleveland, he's down to 40 pct (22 pct from 0-3, 18 pct from 3-10), while 42 pct of his attempts are from beyond the arc (compared to 31 pct and 36 pct, respectively, in his last two seasons in Minnesota). He has very little mid-range game (career 34 pct from 10-16 feet and 40 pct from 16 ft to the arc), he's not getting to the rim, and his lack of hops means that when he does shoot at the rim, his success is mediocre (only 50 pct from 0-3 this year, compared to 61 pct last year and 67 pct his last year in Minnesota).

Seems like he needs to significantly upgrade his midrange game to become more of a threat. Example: Dirk over his career has shot 47 pct from 10-16 feet and taken 25 pct of his FGA from that range. Love has taken only about 8.5 pct of his FGA from that range in his career. I picked Dirk in part because he's a big guy who's not known as a low-post scorer or for being able to jump out of the gym or blow by guys off the dribble. He's made his living in the mid-range. Love seems like he has the talent to play a similar offensive game, even if, as I suggested above, he's no Dirk (I mean, who is?).

            1. another interesting and probably relevant comp is Chris Bosh. With Miami and LeBron, Bosh took 13 FGA per game with an eFG% of 52.4 and was pulling down 7.4 rpg. With Cleveland, Love is taking 12.7 FGA per game with an eFG% of 50.3 and 10.1 rpg. Looking at those numbers, it is kind of funny how Love is getting hammered, but Bosh was recognized as a vital part of two championships and four trips to the Finals.

In Love's 1+ season with Cleveland, he's earned a 113 Ortg and 103 Drtg; Bosh with LeBron: 113 and 103!

I guess I should take my own advice. Love has not been nearly as bad as some folks in the media have seemed to have drawn the story. In fact, he's been Cleveland's Chris Bosh, which was good enough for 2 titles and 4 finals trips in 4 years.

              1. I suppose it's in part because Miami didn't have to give up a Rookie of the Year/potential franchise cornerstone to get him (though Valanciunas wasn't a bad get by Toronto with that Mia pick).

              2. Another problem is no offensive rebounds if he is at the perimeter. That is his best skill.

                1. Yep. He averaged 4.1 ORB per 36 minutes in Minnesota, but is averaging only 2.3 per 36 in Cleveland.

compare again to Bosh: 2.6 per 36 in Toronto, but only 1.7 per 36 with LeBron.

As a team, the Cavs ranked 11th in offensive rebounds last year so it wasn't for a lack of opportunities. This year they are 16th, but 29th in points and 30th in FGA (10th in FG pct).

Of course, Tristan Thompson fills that role for the Cavs (4.2 ORB/36 minutes this year, 4.5 last year).

I would also say his best skill is defensive rebounding and triggering the break, however.

  1. After stinking it up last week, I had one of my best days of bowling ever yesterday, going 156. 201, 168 for a 525 series. I have no idea whether I've figured something out or not. Bowling's a funny game--I'll have it going one week, then the next week I think I'm doing the same thing and nothing works. I think Joaquin Andujar's statement about baseball also applies to bowling.

    1. Man, I wish we could all go bowling together sometime. What's midway for everyone? None of that moonlight bowling or whatever though, cool?

      1. Man, I wish we could all go bowling together sometime.
Yes! And then we can make my ultimate WGOM fantasy come true: a potluck. I want all of our culinary and brewing talents together in one place for the best meal ever.

        1. And then we can make my ultimate WGOM fantasy come true: a potluck.

with enough advanced planning I could disappoint everyone.

        2. I'll bring something I found in the woods.
          Maybe mushrooms.
          Maybe possum.
Depends on what's out there when I go a-looking.

    2. To golf, as well. I've had month-long slumps punctuated by a great round (and vice versa, of course). Anyone who can do anything in sports with any consistency has my awe and respect.

          1. talk about a nerve racking position in sports. Other than key free throws, I'm trying to think of a spot in sports where all eyes are on you

            1. Well, pretty much every at-bat the eyes are on the hitter. Yes, the pitcher is involved, but I think more people expect the hitter to drive the outcome.

What's worse for NFL kickers is that as a group they are so good (way better than NBA free-throw shooters, for instance) that unless they are kicking a record-setting field goal, they never really get credit for what they do.

I watched Four Falls of Buffalo over the weekend.

              'Spoiler' SelectShow

The incredible thing about Scott Norwood's missed field goal is that it was a 47-yarder outside. Squinting at bS's tiny chart, I think that puts it around a 60% expected conversion rate, but the whole thing was treated like he choked and missed an absolute chip shot.

Of course, Walsh's kick has been a gimme for a while now.

                1. Though I think that in soccer, the goalie has little pressure and it's so hard to stop goals. The shooters on the other hand...

    3. My little brother and I went bowling together two weekends ago when he was up. The guys in the lane next to us asked us if we wanted to join a beginner's league. I guess we looked decent enough. If the league wasn't on a rugby night, I might have joined. I was two pins short of my personal best on our third (last) game. I ended at 143. I needed 145 to set a new PR.

  2. So Steph Curry says he hoped Cleveland "still smells a little bit like champagne" then went and hung 35 (7-12 from 3) on the Cavs in three quarters. That's some quality shit-talking.

  3. Paging cheaptoy, AMR & CH ... and any others of the hirsute crowd I've missed: Beards of the Twin Cities

    Sometimes, I wish I hadn’t chosen in such a white-collar, professional-type career.
    -or-
I wish society would accept beards in all their glory, and not just on Billy Gibbons and Paul Bunyan.

Damn my conformist bent and self-imposed restraint.

    1. It does get a little nerve-wracking going into a glass plant, what with being so close to that kind of heat, but it's worth the risk.

      1. I wrote racking and you wrote wracking. I looked it up in the dictionary. Both are listed as correct. That's annoying.

    2. Particularly in winter, right?
These last few weeks, I've been so happy to have facial hair.
I've forgotten, but when you're clean shaven, do the icicles grow directly on your upper lip and chin?

      1. This is my first winter with a beard. It froze over a little last weekend. It was a very interesting sensation.

      2. It's been a few years since I went clean shaven, even in the summer, so I don't recall how it goes in the winter.

      1. "the shag on his face"
This is a funny construction when one considers that the smaller of Britain's two cormorant species is the Shag.
I see from further reading that the distinction between species called "shag" and those called "cormorant" is as suspect as the difference between "pigeon" and "dove". Originally, "Shags" had crests, but the widespread inland cormorant of the U.S. has two crests (It is named "Double-crested Cormorant"), yet somehow was named "cormorant".

I will also being imagining every "shag carpet" to be oily black and smell of fishes.
Scooby-Doo's friend should have oily black hair as well. Given his tastes, I've always assumed he smells of anchovies.

    3. I always rock the winter beard. It might be warmer, but I utilize it to negate the wind chill. Does it work? Just go outside that first time after shaving it off....

      1. Mmm hmm. Alternatively, in the summer the beard makes things uncomfortably warm. I pretty much have it from November to April

          1. My beard comes in so slowly, I don't think I could pull off a seasonal beard. One thing all the time for me, it seems.

        1. I've never found the beard to be unreasonably warm in the summer. It acts like a heat sink! (probably not, but I still feel perfectly comfortable with it in hot weather.)

      2. I stupidly shaved my beard during the middle of the polar vortex two winters ago. That morning was a brutal wait at the bus stop.

          1. I think he meant you burnt me with your comment as he (likely knows) my beard is above reproach.

      1. I was implying the opposite; that but for my concern about appearances (and contemporary "business professional" grooming standards), I'd have a beard that'd put Hayes to shame.

        but well played.

        1. Our office probably has as many men with facial hair (including those with only mustaches) as it has clean-shaven men.
A few alternate. But there are four of us that I've never seen with less than the full beard.

Among the senior management in our office: one full beard, three mustaches (occasional beards on two), one always clean-shaven, and one woman.

      1. Ah yes, I passed the bowling alley on my way to the hotel. There are two movie choices: The Revenant and that Will Ferrell-Marky Mark one. The Revenant just doesn't appeal to me at all for some reason, so I don't like that option.

        1. The Revenant just doesn't appeal to me at all for some reason, so I don't like that option.

Funny ... I'm just the opposite - going to see it with my buddy tonight.

        1. Agreed. I only got 1, 4, and 5 on my own, but other than 8 they all at least seem pretty familiar. Of course, a large percentage of the time the ones that seem familiar end up being movies I've never even heard of...

          1. That's what I thought about the movies until [above spoiler] and all of a sudden she's got this contrived drama and ridiculous unromantic [above spoiler] to have to fall in love with.
Oh, for someone to have the balls to say, "This is turning out way better than the book", let's scrap that story and do something better. They can do a more faithful version of the book in a decade or so, and not squander these awesome fifteen to twenty minutes!"

Is she the best? I can't recall if I've seen her in anything else.
She really did "slouchy teen" so well. Sarcastic and cynical but only to a point and half as just a defensive pose.
And then they had to tack on a [above spoiler] story to it!

    1. I saw that about a month ago. I've still not remembered to listen when I get home. That, and I don't necessarily want to subject FW to it.

    1. they were awful in the second half, topped off by the closing sequence of the 3rd quarter, giving up a layup off of an inbounds-turnover with 2 seconds to go.
