  1. Mrs. Runner & Runner daughter leave this morning for NYC for a long weekend of 25th birthday celebration. Have you seen the forecast?! There's a reason I chose instead to go to Phoenix and then stay here and watch the dog.

      1. I've got bonded retainers so it still feels weird and reckless just to bite into a whole apple.
I sliced it and then ate it.

I also had greens on the sandwich I had for lunch. They seem so pointless when all they do is stick in your brackets.

  2. According to hashtags, it's Squirrel Appreciation Day.
They do make a nice soup! I fried up a few limbs and they were pretty fantastic, though I doubt I could replicate how I did it.

I do find their tiny bones hard to pick through. I could avoid that by tossing the back and thorax and just cooking the limbs, but I'm not that kind of wasteful.
There is a certain joy to be found in sucking the little morsel of meat out from between the ridges of their scapula that I just haven't found anywhere else.
Maybe there's something similar with shellfish...

    1. Crabs. Those bastards hide the best meat between the sharpest bits of shell. Always a pleasure when you pick a crab clean.

      1. There are places that will clean them for you, and even though that's not as messy, I find the food tastes better when I do it myself. Psychology is awesome.

  3. Hey Infinite Jesters, my colleague just told me about Infinite Winter, which begins next week. The site/project/undertaking includes a schedule: at 75 pages a week*, the book takes 13 weeks to read. I'm not sure whether I'll follow the project, but that pace makes it seem downright do-able.

    *not counting footnotes

  4. Wow. D.C. is expecting over a foot of snow from a blizzard this weekend. Do they even have snow removal equipment? This storm on the East Coast could be really bad.

    1. They do have snow removal equipment, but not nearly as many plows and no one there has any idea how to drive.

    2. Got out of there on a delayed DIA->BDL 11:15 flight tonight (which started from PIT, another story). Everyone waiting on the shuttle that takes you out from Gate 35X to the plane on the tarmac was freezing while we waited for the last 20 passengers to try to squeeze in the already full bus), but infinitely happy that we were blowing that town. Tomorrow that place will be /*Jack Black otro voce */ "Nut_Casa."

Now I'm curious what was updated.

  5. My, Very, Educated (if you look down) and her Moon, Mother, Just, and Served will be visible in the Eastern morning sky
    into February.

I once saw Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn in a reflection of perfectly still water in the Boundary Waters. A long while ago.

    1. That list seems to reflect a lot of old problems that have been corrected, or species that were only ever at the southern or northern tip of their range in MN.
Probably not easy to get a species off that list.
Pelicans: once down to one breeding colony in MN, now way back up.
Trumpeter Swans: Almost a nuisance in places.
Bald Eagles: A dime a dozen.
Loon: "High Priority in several Bird Conservation Regions of Waterbird plans". I don't even know what that means. I'm not aware of any drastic declines in populations.

The taxonomy isn't even up-to-date: "Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow", "Common Moorhen Gallinule"

      1. "Same effect"?

That article didn't have nearly as many humorous references to in-laws as Car Talk.

            1. Verily. Complaint of the minutest importance, but it's all too clear just how funny they find themselves.

              1. I find them amusing, but yeah, I'm not laughing as hard as they are. In-law humor has never done much for me anyway. I do enjoy the show, though. They dumb down the talk about cars enough for me to understand.

      1. I despise a cold car. The only thing I hate more is a car that's too hot with my winter jacket on.

Honestly, basically never getting to be at a comfortable temperature is my most hated thing about winter.

        1. People get funny with temperatures. "It's 30 degrees outside where we're working, so I'm going to set the thermostat in our sheltered space to 85, even though we're wearing multiple layers." Then everyone is uncomfortable no matter where we're working.

          1. Sometimes it's unavoidable. People that office by doors to the outside or by crappy windows are cold no matter how high the heat is, while the people in the middle of the building are sweatin bullets
