Twins DFA Logan Darnell, add Mike Strong. At least Terry Ryan can say he made a Strong move in the off-season.
Darnell seems like an odd choice to drop, but maybe the Twins view him as a AAA guy.
I'm not going to condemn the move, because I'm not real high on either of them. Strong's positives appear to be that he's from Minnesota, he's left-handed, and he strikes out a lot of guys. On the other hand, he'll be twenty-seven this year and has pitched only 16.1 innings, and not very good ones, above AA. Darnell's about the same age, is also left-handed, doesn't strikeout as many, but had a good year in Rochester last year. Maybe they think no one will claim Darnell and they can have them both. You never know with relievers, but I'm not very confident that either of them will ever be much.
I think the Twins view Darnell as more of a long reliever/fifth starter instead of a possible LOOGY, which I think Strong would represent better given the strikeouts. A real positive sign is the Twins picking the guy with more strikeouts. Once upon a time, it seemed like the Twins never worried about that stat. Either way, this is a minor deal. Strong would appear to have the higher upside given the better strikeout rate. His numbers in AAA were a SSS in high altitude, at least the home ballpark was.
