February 22, 2016: Women’s Hockey

The jalapeno had been asking to go to a hockey game, which is what led us to go see the University of Minnesota Women's team play Wisconsin on Saturday. We had a great time, and the marching band (well, they weren't actually marching) made it a lot of fun and far more kid-friendly than I anticipated. Watching the jalapeno dance like a madman to "Uptown Funk" was fantastic. The game ended with a win in overtime, so it was exciting right up to the last moment.

  1. Glad to hear it was a good time. I've been trying to get to a game all winter, but never managed. Maybe this'll kick me in the butt.

    1. That looks awesome. My childhood neighbors were there & said Soul Asylum played before the game. He was on cloud nine.

  2. I saw a little discussion about the Wild-Blackhawks game on yesterday's CoC.

I took my 8-year old son and we enjoyed it. He's a die-hard Wild fan and I'm a Blackhawks fan (rooted for their IHL team during my formative hockey fan years - go Krivokrasov!) and we were representing our teams with jerseys and hats. The fan interaction was great for the most part, he got a big kick out of Wild fans giving me a hard time. He couldn't make it to the end, which was fine with me since it meant we didn't have to wait in a long line to get on the train.

Wanted to see what other citizens think of TCF Bank Stadium. It is the first time I've been there for a sellout and I didn't really care for the place when it was that packed. All of the lines were horrible and the concourses were really hard to get through. Maybe having a kid in tow made it more stressful.

I can totally relate! I haven't been to TCF Bank Stadium, but in the last year I've taken the jalapeno to Target Field, Xcel, and now Ridder Arena. It's such a different experience having a kid along. Given that I end up plying him with food to help sustain his interest, the slow concessions lines at Ridder were frustrating (though I can't complain too much since everyone got a $5 off concessions coupon upon entering).

      1. Yesterday was the first time I've gotten out of a stadium without buying anything in a long time - he didn't want to wait in the normal concession lines (they were long and not moving when we tried) and every stand we went to was out of pretzels and hot chocolate by the time we got there.

    2. I went to this year's Packers/Vikings game at TCF. We ended up in pretty decent seats and had a good time. I spend so much time in the car that avoiding going to the bathroom for several hours isn't a huge problem for me, and I didn't want to deal with concession lines, so I basically sat on my piece of bleacher the entire game. The line heading in was kind of slow moving, but we had good luck leaving the stadium and didn't have to wait too long for our train. It was a good experience overall.

I didn't either. The lines to the mens' bathrooms were insane. If you were in those lines, the good news is that they moved very fast. The bad news is that they disrupted the concourse flow for everyone else. It reminded me of the Metrodome concourses, just brutal.

  3. On Saturday afternoon the newest member of Chez Hayes arrived. Since she's a Piscean, we'll call her the Poissonnier. She shares a birthday with her Cuban great-grandfather, who is a very happy Papou right now. Both the Poissonnier & Mrs. Hayes are doing great; we may headed back to the maison today.

    1. ヽ(´▽`)/

Awesome dude! Now to remember how to spell "Poissonnier"*

*Also reminds me of one of my favorite QI bits:

Stephen Fry: Do you know what the French for "flying fish" is?
      Alan Davies: Poisson … d'aeroplane …?

        1. Rooting for a Leap Day birthday! I think it would be cool; Mrs. Hayes, not so much. But sharing a birthday with Mrs. Hayes' Papou is pretty awesome. We can't wait for him to meet the Poissonnier.

  4. I don't get to watch much hockey on account of broadcast TV and having children and whatnot, but just to happened to flip through and land upon the girls state semi-final Friday and then the final was on at the fine establishment I happened to be at on Saturday. I had hometown rooting interest, so that helped keep my attention, but...those kids can play.

  5. Dr. Chop was selected as a juror today. The crime is pretty heinous, and carries a mandatory life without parole sentence if convicted. She was told that they'll begin tomorrow and should be done by Friday. That's kind of nuts to me.

      1. When she was called to duty we both talked about how it would be interesting to serve, and I made some half joking comment about experiencing a murder trial or some such. This is, not that, but it's bad. However, Dr. Chop will be an excellent juror, but as you said, I don't envy her either.
