  1. Joe Mauer career walk % 12.0
    walk % last year 10.1
    career high walk % 14.0 (2012)
    walk % this year 16.8

    yay.

  2. Huh? Turns out I could've made my annual "Tottenham won't come in second" bet this year too. Who knew?

    1. Jeez, also check EPL spreadsheet. Philo stormed ahead last day for the win. Again.

      1. I will admit that I just checked this weekend's scores before I came to the site, and even knew* the outcome before checking the spreadsheet.

        * well, pretty sure, at least.

  3. Fun with SSS, Catchers Edition:

    Suzuki .191/.250/.265/.515 in 68 AB
    Murphy .075/.119/.100/.219 in 40 AB
    Centeno .455/.500/.818/1.318 in 11 AB

    1. For comparison:

Suzuki lifetime .254/.311/.367/.678 in 3914 AB
Murphy lifetime .242/.286/.338/.624 in 302 AB
Centeno lifetime .208/.269/.278/.547 in 72 AB

  4. I strongly advise against spilling boiling water on your sock. I was dumping some preheat water into my mash tun and spilled a small amount on my foot. Hurt life the dickens.

    1. I'm bottling today. I've not had a great experience getting things in order. Must be something in the phase of the moon stacking up against home brewers.

      1. Now that you say something like that, I notice the clouds. It's not supposed to rain, but stranger things have happened.

      2. On second thought, you might be right. I was helping a guy at the homebrew store transfer his grains from a bucket to a garbage bag and managed to dump half of them on the floor.

        1. A swing top bottle just cracked in my hand as I was tightening the bale. A shard hit me in the eye, and thankfully didn't lodge itself in. I'm finished bottling, and won't be engaging with anything else brew related until the moon cycles.

          1. Damn, man. You may just need to shutter yourself in and not get out of bed until then.

          2. My propane tank ran out with fifteen minutes to go. Fortunately I had a second one from the grill, but still.

If I break the only hydrometer I've ever had...

    1. No matter how dirty his slide was — and it appeared to be plenty dirty — Bautista shouldn’t have been punched, because that’s not the way grown adults handle disputes.

Baer obviously didn't watch the replay. Bautista was gearing up to hit Odor, who was quicker on the draw and ended it before Bautista could start it. I'm not a fan of Bautista's perspective, but the moral preening at HBT wears really thin.

      1. Yeah it does. On one hand, I think there needs to be sane, moral arguments to be made that go against the jock journalist "Do whatever it takes to win" mentality that gets bandied about a lot. On the other hand, I don't like the way they do it.

It is interesting though that in this context--a baseball game--grown men can punch each other in public (something not actually part of the game) and cause harm to one another in front of witnesses and not spend nights in jail and wind up on probation or worse like most of my clientele would. I'm not saying the two situations are analogous, but I don't think they're apples and oranges either.

I had that same thought while watching the brawl.

Also, that was quite a punch Odor threw.

        2. Good point.

Fighting in baseball and hockey frequently happens for different reasons (although fighting for fighting's sake is fading from pro hockey, it seems). What I think merits additional consideration in this situation is the injury risk on the play and who Bautista chose for retaliation. Bautista was irked about getting hit (I don't know where the pitch landed, or whether it was intentional). The way he chose to express that was to attempt a slide with a high injury risk for Odor, a 22 year old with a very promising future. Odor, who's in his serf years, certainly knows such a slide could end his season (and potentially derail his career). If I were a young player, I'd probably be ticked if a guy who's made over $71 million decided to send my pitcher a message in a way that could hurt my opportunity to be successful and attain similar security.

          1. I saw a gif from a couple of weeks ago where Odor was sliding into third and Beltre tagged him normally. Odor then starting jawing at Beltre and looked like he wanted to slug somebody then. I agree with your point, and the guy seems a little too hot for his own good.

            1. I'm confused – aren't Odor & Beltre on the same team? Or did you mean Bautista & Beltre?

            2. Odor is on Beltre's team?

I also liked Beltre's reaction to the whole thing - grab Bautista and carry him away from the whole thing.

              1. Yeah, that was the Respected Veteran move. Good thing Bautista didn't touch Beltre's head!
