May 24, 2016: Kim

Yesterday was Kim's birthday. I put together a post about her, but couldn't get it right and I scrapped it.

Kim was my sort-of girlfriend who died a couple of weeks shy of her 17th birthday in a car crash. Yesterday while I was typing, I realized this past May 5th was the 20th anniversary of her death and I just couldn't deal with it. She's been gone longer than she was here, and I wonder how many people think of her on her birthday anymore.

Kim and I wouldn't have made it as a couple because I was off to college in June, but all the same, we were (sort-of) together when she left this world, and every time I think of her, it still hurts.

  1. Spooky, I wish I had something profound or at least helpful to say, but everything I thought of just sounded trite and cliched. You and Kim's family are in our prayers today.

    1. I second that.

Your comment wondering how many people think about her on birthday hit me...it is important for us to remember those we lost to keep their memory alive.

The post made me think of a good friend who died in a car accident while we were in college. I like reminiscing about the time we spent together and our friendship, even though it makes me sad, so thank you for spurring me to think of him. I, too, wonder how many people think of him these days.

  2. Spooky, I was around that same age when an acquaintance (coworker at my summer job) was killed. While it's not the same as your situation, I still think of him too and it still hurts.

I feel like even just the act of keeping Kim in your memory and sharing that with others has meaning. Hugs to you.

  3. Beautiful weather so I'm heading to my first twins game this year before the rain works its way in. Those new gutters can install themselves right?

  4. Had my one year appoint to check how the hip replacement is doing; Dr. is please with everything, and he said it's not common to be back running afterwards (although I think most hip replacement candidates weren't runners prior).

My wife caught me limping on Saturday following some heavy yard work, and I had the Dr. also check the other hip. The x-ray showed plenty of wear -- enough that he considered it a candidate for replacement as well, but it isn't giving me near the problems that the first one did back when I had it replaced. I suggested we at least give it a year, and he said he would be seeing me back in a year in any case, so...I guess we'll see.

  5. It's a beautiful day in north-central South Dakota--sunny, high around 80, light wind--so I got the bicycle out for my first real bike ride of the year. I went about 10.5 miles. Not bad for an old out-of-shape pastor!

      1. I haven't done it but there is a cool cross-Iowa bike ride (Ragbrai) you could do. Sleep in people's yards, etc.

        1. I remember that from when I lived in the Sioux City area. It's a huge deal in Iowa.

  6. Any Lissie fans here? Or just fans of free small shows? I won free tickets to the Lissie show on Thursday at 5pm at Icehouse. My wife can't go with me so if anyone is interested and available, let me know!

  7. Happy 75th birthday to Bob Dylan! My favorite bit from the write-up in today's Writer's Almanac:

Dylan has even found his way into medical literature, but not in any way you might expect. Five Swedish scientists have had a running contest for many years: they are competing to see who can work the most Bob Dylan references into their writing. It started with an article about intestinal gas, titled "Nitric Oxide and Inflammation: The answer is blowing in the wind." The article's co-author, Eddie Weitzberg, explained, "We both really liked Bob Dylan and we thought the quotes really fitted nicely with what we were trying to achieve with the title."

  8. The Twins might drive me crazy, but at least they aren't the Marlins. The team is suing nine former season ticket holders and two stadium vendors for contract violations. Shocking to hear the Marlins would scrap promised amenities to ticket holders once attendance dropped.

  9. “I asked [Park] what he did when he had to get back on track over in Korea,” Molitor said, “and he said he never got off track.”

  10. Did you know that Babe Ruth pitched a complete game and hit a home run in the same game? You probably did. But did you know he once did it when he was 38 years old? Its not often a pitcher is your 3 hole batter!

This has been a trip down a b-r rabbit hole.
