May 26, 2016: Networking, or somthing

My wife long ago set aside career aspirations in lieu of Army and family, but never gave up the desire to be something. We just don't know what, or how, after all these years.

  1. just got the system error banner for the first time. Har!

also, was at a restaurant/bar for lunch yesterday, which happened to have Twins/KC on. Sorry about that 4th inning, guys. But you are welcome on that Sano donger.

  2. Zee, tell Mrs. German I was 47 when I decided to become a pastor. It's not too late for her.

    1. Thank you. Appropriate, because when I left for the Army, she was working near and considering attending SJU's School of Theology.

    2. Dr. Chop and I always knew one of us would have to give up our professional goals in order to be together. The tough part was negotiating the no resentment clause. All in all, things have worked out, though we've lived a pretty unusual life.

More to the point, being something and having a career are two different things. I'm an artist, though I struggle to find time to make work and have to travel long distances / spend lots of money to teach. Again, it's taken me years to really, truly learn that I am not defined by my job. Just my two cents.

      1. This. It can be so tough to remember that we are all whole people, and that our jobs are often just a way to earn some money. Especially among well-educated folks, it feels like "career" is defining. It's not.

  3. Morning game alert: Rochester, with Jose Berrios pitching, hosts Indianapolis at 10:05 Central time.

  4. Let her know I still have aspirations of being something too. Specifically: taller.

  5. okay, might as well try to get this crank turning again:

    FATHER KNOWS BEST

Looking for at least 7 FKB volunteers to get us through the year. I know there are a couple of you that mentioned an interest previously, but we never really got around to making things official. So, if you want in (it's been long enough that it doesn't matter if you've done one of the more recent ones), let me know below (as well as a time preference), and we'll get this under way:

    June: Algonad
    July: Can o' Corn
    August: Beau
    September: DPWY
    October: Phil
    November: Nibbsy
    December: CH

    1. Sure thing. It'll allow me to complain about the kid who stuck a piece of pea gravel in my daughter's ear yesterday, which a Dad, a nurse and two physicians have not been able to remove. Pediatric ENT specialist, here we come!

      1. Interesting article in the Economist on using robots to collect foreign objects in the body ("The fantastic voyage", May 21st). Every year 3,500 people in America (most of them children) swallow tiny button battery cells used in small electronic devices - unfortunately they can burn holes in the stomach wall. MIT dudes have developed a device whereby you swallow a cube of ice, oncet the ice melts the robot unfolds. It it steered by an magnetic field outside the body. The robot drags the battery to the the intestines where it makes its happy way to freedom. Another robot can deliver medication to the site of the battery burn. Cool stuff, but still practicing on artificial stomachs, then pigs.

    2. In. I did one earlier this year, so I'm happy to wait a bit. If I can get this on my calendar, I can get it written.

      1. If you need a backup pinch hitter, I can do . . . er . . . um . . . Janvember.

    1. There are a few jokes to be had because of the state of the Twins, but drinking and driving is not funny.

  6. Great baseball names: the centerfielder for the Palm Beach Cardinals is named Blake Drake.
