Minor Details: Games of July 29

Byron Buxton is hitting, but was removed from the game early.  Hector Santiago does better but doesn't appear ready to rejoin the rotation.  The Red Wings play twelve innings--the Lookouts were just getting warmed up at that point.  Position players throw three shutout innings for Chattanooga, as a wild game overwhelms an excellent start for Felix Jorge.  Only one hit for the Miracle.  Clark Beeker throws a rare nine-inning complete game--one suspects he has no more to learn in Cedar Rapids.  The E-Twins sweep.  The GCL Twins win late.  The DSL Twins lose late.

TOLEDO 6, ROCHESTER 5 IN TOLEDO (12 INNINGS)

The Red Wings led 5-1 after six, but the Mud Hens scored one in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie it.  Dominick Ficociello had a two-run single and Matt den Dekker singled home the tying run.  Rochester then stranded seven runners in innings nine through twelve.  In the bottom of the twelfth, Efren Navarro walked and scored from first on a double by John Hicks to end the game.  Rochester went 2-for-18 with men in scoring position.

Hector Santiago struck out four in three innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 but was removed from the game after beating out an infield single in the seventh.  The Twins are downplaying it, but it seems like a concern.  Daniel Palka was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Matt Hague was 2-for-5.  ByungHo Park was 2-for-6 with a home run (his eighth) and a double.  Niko Goodrum and J. B. Shuck were each 2-for-6.

CHATTANOOGA 2, BIRMINGHAM 1 IN CHATTANOOGA (21 INNINGS)

Jose Vinicio doubled and scored in the first inning.  It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the ninth, when Andy Wilkins singled home Alex Perez with the tying run.  The Barons had the potential winning run thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single in the tenth.  The Lookouts left the bases loaded in the eleventh and left men on second and third in the fourteenth.  Birmingham got a man to third in the fifteenth.  By the nineteenth, Chattanooga was using position players to pitch.  Infielder Alex Perez, who had scored the tying run in the ninth, pitched two shutout innings of relief and only gave up a walk.  Outfielder Max Murphy pitched a scoreless inning in the twenty-first.  In the bottom of the twenty-first, the Barons went to a position player as well, using infielder Toby Thomas.  The first two batters to face him were called out on strikes, including Randy LeBlanc, who is normally a pitcher but went to right field in the nineteenth (he caught the only ball hit to him).  The next four batters drew walks, forcing home the winning run.

Felix Jorge got things going again, going nine innings and giving up one run on four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.  Randy Rosario and Ryan Eades each pitched two shutout innings, Raul Fernandez pitched there shutout innings, Luke Bard and Perez each pitched two shutout innings, and Murphy pitched a shutout inning.  Murphy was also 3-for-8 with a double.  Perez was 2-for-5 and is batting .323.  Levi Michael was 2-for-8 with a walk.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-9.  Brian Navaretto was 0-for-8, dropping his average from .235 to .160 in one day.

CLEARWATER 3, FORT MYERS 0 IN CLEARWATER

In more normal action, Jan Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the second and Grenny Cumana singled home a run in the seventh.  The Miracle had only one hit, a Jermaine Palacios single in the sixth.  They also got a walk and an error in that inning, loading the bases with two out, but an infield out ended the inning.

Lewis Thorpe pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Glen Perkins pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts.  Alex Robinson struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings to make his ERA 2.45 with 14 strikeouts in 7.1 innings.  Palacios was 1-for-4 and is batting .319.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, CLINTON 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Joe Cronin singled home a run in the third and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth for the only runs of the game.  The LumberKings never had more than one man on base.

Clark Beeker pitched a rare nine-inning complete game, throwing an even 100 pitches.  He gave up five hits and no walks with seven strikeouts to drop his ERA to 2.31 with a WHIP of 0.96.  He has not given up more than one run in a game since June 15.  Gorge Munoz was 2-for-3.  Jimmy Kerrigan made his debut for Cedar Rapids and was 1-for-3.

ELIZABETHTON 6, PRINCETON 0 IN PRINCETON (GAME 1--7 INNINGS--COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Jose Miranda and Shane Carrier went back-to-back in the first inning and Andrew Bechtold tripled and scored in the second to make it 3-0. The Twins added a run in the third and got two more in the sixth on a Mark Contreras homer.  The Rays never had more than one man on base.

Edwar Colina struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks, before the game was suspended.  His ERA is now 2.65 with 37 strikeouts in 34 innings.  Bailey Ober pitched four shutout innings to keep his ERA at zero with a WHIP of 0.55 in 7.1 innings.  Blair Lasko pitched a scoreless inning.  Contreras was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) to make his average .301.  Bechtold was 2-for-3 with a triple and is batting .355.  Carrier's home run was his fifth and he is batting .336.  Miranda's home run was his seventh and he is batting .327.  T. J. Dixon was 0-for-3 and is batting .300.

ELIZABETHTON 13, PRINCETON 3 IN PRINCETON (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Twins scored seven in the first and put this one out of reach early.  Carson Crites had a two-run homer in the inning.  The Rays never got closer than six runs after that.

Brusdar Graterol struck out six in four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks.  Jordan Gore is 3-for-4 with a home run and is batting .403.  Colton Waltner was 3-for-4 and is batting .313.  Crites was 2-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Andrew Bechtold was 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .364.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .327.  Shane Carrier was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.

GCL TWINS 6, GCL RED SOX 5 AT RED SOX

The Twins opened the third with five singles and eventually scored four runs to take a 5-1 lead.  The Red Sox came back, though, scoring one in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to tie it 5-5.  In the ninth, Dane Hutcheon as hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by Jean Carlos Arias to put the Twins back in the lead, this time to stay.

Henry Centeno, on a rehab assignment, pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Juan Mojica pitched two shutout innings.  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Victor Tademo was 2-for-4.  Arias was 2-for-5 with a triple.  Royce Lewis was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and is batting .320.  Alex Robles was 0-for-4 and is batting .323.  Benjamin Rodriguez was 1-for-4 and is batting .313.

DSL NATIONALS 3, DSL TWINS 2 AT NATIONALS

The Twins trailed 2-0 going to the ninth, but Alberoni Nunez singled in a run and another scored on a wild pitch to tie it 2-2.  The comeback went for naught, however, as a walk, a stolen base, a bunt, and a sacrifice fly brought home the winning run for the Nationals in the bottom of the ninth.

Luis Gil struck out six in five innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Agustin Marte was 2-for-4 with a double and is batting .303.  Nunez was 1-for-1 and is batting .359.

  1. Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 but was removed from the game after beating out an infield single in the seventh. The Twins are downplaying it, but it seems like a concern.

He played today so nothing too serious it. Something I missed is that Buxton suffers from migraines. His rehab started late because he couldn't play on Monday or Tuesday.

    1. I had not heard (or else had forgotten) that he had migranes. One more reason for the haters to get after him any time they cause him to miss a game.
