Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of October 31

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Twins:  Chris Paul was 0-for-4.  Tom Hackimer pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Tyler Jay pitched one inning, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks.  Andrew Vasquez struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks.

PEORIA 9, SURPRISE 2 IN SURPRISE

Jonathan Davis (Toronto) hit a two-run double in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie and homers in the sixth by Ronald Acuna (Atlanta) and Austin Riley (Atlanta) put the game out of reach.  Acuna was 3-for-5 with a double in addition to the home run, which was his fourth.  Riley's homer was also his fourth.  Braden Bishop (Seattle) was 3-for-4.  Franmil Reyes (San Diego) hit a home run.  Henry Owens (Boston) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

SCOTTSDALE 6, GLENDALE 2 IN SCOTTSDALE

Scottsdale scored four in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.  Brantley Bell (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with a double.  For Glendale, Taylor Hearn (Pittsburgh) struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.

SALT RIVER 8, MESA 2 IN MESA

Mesa led 2-0 after five, but home runs by Ryan Mountcastle (Baltimore), Corey Ray (Milwaukee), and Rodrigo Vigil (Miami), all in the sixth inning, gave Mesa a 6-2 lead.  Steve Wilkerson (Baltimore) was 3-for-5.  It was Mountcastle's third home run of the season.  Adrian Houser (Milwaukee) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two.  For Mesa, Spencer Turnbull (Detroit) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks while striking out two.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Daniel Palka (Magallanes) was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer.

LARA 4, ZULIA 1 IN LARA

Lara scored four in the second and it was all they needed.  Henry Urrutia was 2-for-2 with two walks.  Raul Rivero pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

ANZOATEGUI 12, CARACAS 3 IN CARACAS

A three-run fourth put Anzoategui up 5-2 and a five-run sixth put the game out of reach.  Edwin Garcia was 3-for-5 with a triple, a walk, and three RBIs.  Rafael Ortega had three RBIs.  For Caracas, Henry Alejandro Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a walk.

LA GUAIRA 12, MAGALLANES 6 IN MAGALLANES

Magallanes led 3-1 after one, but a five-run fourth put La Guaira up 6-3.  It was just a 6-5 lead after four, but La Guaira put up four in the fifth to take control of he game.  Nate Orf was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.  Omar Carrizales was 3-for-5.  Rehiner Cordova was 2-for-3 with three runs.  Jorma Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  For Magallanes, in addition to Palka, Alberth Martinez was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, his fourth.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

LOS MOCHIS 5, MEXICALI 2 IN MEXICALI

Los Mochis trailed 2-1 after seven but scored two in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the win.  Jonathan Castellanos pitched six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Rolando Valdez pitched six innings for Mexicali, giving up one run on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

HERMOSILLO 6, JALISCO 2 IN HERMOSILLO

Bryce Brentz hit a three-run homer in a four-run first that put Hermosillo in control early.  It was Brentz' sixth home run.  Fernando Perez was 3-for-5 with a double.  Ryan Verdugo struck out nine in five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks.  For Jalisco, Agustin Murillo was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth.

OBREGON 4, NAVOJOA 2 IN NAVOJOA

It was tied 2-2 after seven, but Obregon scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to win it.  A passed ball allowed the go-ahead run to score in the eighth.  Leo Heras was 4-for-5 with two doubles.  David Reyes pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks while striking out four.  For Navojoa, Jaime Lugo pitched six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

MAZATLAN 2, CULIACAN 0 IN MAZATLAN

Esteban Quiroz doubled home a run in the first and Gilberto Galaviz singled one home in the sixth.  Mitch Lively pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks while striking out four.  For Culiacan, Andres Ivan Mesa pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

GIGANTES 5, LICEY 1 IN LICEY

The Gigantes scored two in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and Melvin Mercedes hit a two-run single in the ninth to put the game out of reach.  The Gigantes had just four hits but drew seven walks.  Patrick Johnson pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one.  Jair Jurrjens (remember him?) struck out seven in 6.1 innings for Licey, giving up one run on two hits and three walks.

ESCOGIDO 4, ESTRELLAS 1 AT ESTRELLAS

Tyler Austin's two-run homer capped a three-run sixth that broke a 1-1 tie.  Ex-Twin Justin Haley pitched six innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits and no walks while striking out three.  Radhames Liz pitched 4.2 innings for the Estrellas, giving up and unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out four.

AGUILAS 5, TOROS 2 AT AGUILAS

The Aguilas scored all five runs in the fourth and it was enough.  Edwin Espinal was 3-for-3.  Jorge Lopez struck out seven in 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks.
