December 16, 2017: The Wedge

Tonight I go down to Blue Earth for a Christmas celebration with...a majority of my dad's family. One of his siblings and his wife have isolated themselves from the rest, and it's created a very difficult dynamic. It's also heartbreaking, of course. Even though I only saw them a couple of times a year, they're always part of my childhood holiday memories. Now they'll have passed on a generation from now, and I'm not sure they'll matriculate back into the family before then.

  1. I've not mentioned it here yet, but we'll be attending a nephew's funeral on Monday, son of Mrs. Twayn's oldest brother/cousin (intrafamilial adoption thing). He'd struggled with addiction for several years but in the end he couldn't overcome it. Sweet kid, nice as could be. We'll miss him a lot. Also this week, Mrs. Twayn's little brother came out on Facebook as transgender and in a domestic relationship. My wife has an interesting family.

    1. Sorry for your loss. Happy for the courage of the li'l BiL to come out, and best wishes to ... her? That circumstance comes with a lot of challenges, both external/social and, often, internal (medical and behavioral).

One of the things I most appreciate about libertarianism is the core respect for self-determination. It is perhaps the strongest connection between Libertarians and left-liberals, the idea that each of us should be respected to be who we are rather than who society wants us to be.

  2. Just grabbing lunch between practice and performance of the St Louis Low Brass Collective Christmas invitational. The whole stage is full of all my trombone, euphonium, and tuba friends. Looks like the St Louis Symphony trombones won't make it this year - the symphony is probably touring. Those four are awesome and a whole lot of fun to play with them, even if I don't deserve to even hold their mutes.

  3. Man, this instant pot thing is pretty great. I never knew how much I did, in fact, need a pressure cooker in my life. Yesterday I made pork ragu in about half an hour and today shredded Chipotle beef tacos in about two hours.

    1. Since it came in a labeled box, I now know I’ll be getting in for Christmas. I’m looking forward to jumping in to the world of pressure cooking for the first time, so if I’d love to hear any recipe recommendations if you’ve got them.

      1. Start here. *

It was mentioned a couple days ago, but serious eats had a pretty good pressure cooker section. I also went to tastespotting.com and a search on instant pot and pressure cooker and found some good recipes. I learned the hard way, but avoid really starchy foods low gravies. (or add the corn starch after pressure cooking). I also made macaroni noodles in there the other day for Mac and cheese and it took about half the time than doing it in a pot of water.

*h/t to Zach. It is not hyperbole that that is the best thing I have ever eaten.

    1. I'm still undecided on the jerseys but the wolves should have 80 points at halftime instead of 50

      1. Yup, this will be a tough loss to stomach if they don't pull their heads out of their asses in the fourth here.
