We're starting to get into the season for dance recitals. My oldest two kids dance, and their theme this year is "Broadway". Aquinas gets to dance to "Just Can't Wait to Be King" and Aristotle gets "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow."
As themes for dance recitals go, it's not the worst. I mean, last year's was "Take it from the top" and I still don't know really what that meant.
So today let's talk Dance Recitals. What was your first dance song? Theme? What theme would you choose for a dance recital? What song would you love to perform a dance to?
I know this topic might not be our usual song and dance, but I think that kind of makes it fun, right?
So Niko Case is coming to the Palace in early September. I have two extra tickets for the floor if anyone is interested. $44 each with the fees.

6. "Damn!"
All three girls are in this weekend's dance recital. The theme is Disney tunes. I know LBR (the youngest) has "Winnie the Pooh" as one of hers, but I don't recall any of the other songs.
Previous years have had "California", "The Kings" (Elvis and Michael Jackson), TV songs, "Pure Entertainment!" (whatever that was).
The TV Song I remember (this is when CER was the only dancer) was "Believe It Or Not (theme from 'Greatest American Hero')".
"California" had "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", but I do not believe it had "California Love", "I Love L.A.", or Fatboy Slim's "Kalifornia". But those are the first songs I come up with for the theme.
I didn’t have any dance recitals growing up, but did plenty of social dancing; Pa played in a polka band, and I learned how to do several ballroom dances along the way. During high school I started taking ballet. The first ballet I performed in was Paquita, dancing one half of the pas de deux in the first act. I enjoyed ballet quite a bit (for aesthetic & social reasons) and briefly contemplated applying to dance BFA programs.
At our wedding, our first dance was to Sam Cooke’s “That’s Where It’s At.” For me, prominent horns are an essential ingredient in dance music; my only real exception is for tango. I really dig Latin jazz and I’d love to be able to salsa. If I could participate in another large group dance, it’d be a restaging of the “Shake a Tail Feather” dance from The Blues Brothers.
