I'm trying to keep this Cup coffee related. Just found out about Jumpy Monkey coffee which specifically works to employ individuals with disabilities in their coffee roasting business. They'll be getting some more of my dollars, I suspect.

I spent the weekend with my oldest friend, his wife, and their infant son. My buddy’s dad took a trip with his wife to visit their daughter in Namibia last week. He’d retired from teaching special ed a few years ago, and became a grandfather for the first time just a few months ago. On Thursday he suffered a fatal heart attack. His wife & daughter are back in the States, but his body is still waiting to cross the Atlantic. I thought I knew most of what there is to know about losing a parent suddenly & unexpectedly, but, wow, is this situation tough.
Oh man, that's rough. My condolences to your friend and his family.
Your friend and his family are in our prayers.
My eyes hurt from rolling.
Reports are that the Twins are calling up Field to fill in for Grossman.
That's Johnny "Ball" Field.
Not Johnny "All Hit, No" Field?
Johnny "out" Field works on multiple levels
Berman would probably go Johnny "look at me, I can be, center" Field
A couple of weeks ago I was researching the candidates for office in my area to decide how I would vote in the primaries. One click led to another and before long I was applying for a position as a political organizer for the Minnesota DFL. I had an interview last Tuesday and got offered the job on Thursday. On Friday I saw a doctor to diagnose some abdominal issues I'd been having. I was concerned that it could be a hernia but that's not the case, it turned out to be a nonspecific intestinal cholic and things have been improving pretty steadily for the past several days. So, after confirming that I can physically perform the job duties that include several hours of walking each day, and after a great deal of soul searching and contemplation and prayer, I've decided to accept the position. As my wife put it so well, it's time to listen to what the universe is trying to tell me. This will be a temporary gig that runs through the middle of November, the pay is meager compared to what I'm used to, and I'll be looking for full-time work again after the election. But for the next few months, I'm going to be doing my part to get other citizens involved in the political process and actually participate in our democracy. I think you all know where I stand politically, so there's no need to go deeper into that. For those with similar views and adjacent geographies who feel the call to get involved as volunteers, feel free to reach out to me via email (that would be my moniker here, at comcast followed by a period and net). I will, of course, continue to respect the rules of the basement and recuse myself from political discussions. Onward and upward!
I am proud of you my brother. I would love to take on a similar role up here but, bar/restaurant + politics = no money. I will just continue to work the edges of fight.
Good on ya brother! Hope it’s as fulfilling a gig as it can be.
File under “Not Surprising”: Mauer & Morrison have cleared waivers. MLBTR cites Mauer’s full no-trade clause, but his 10-5 rights give him the same protection.
I just noticed that Michael Pineda made his first appearance as a Twin today. He pitched two innings for the GCL Twins, giving up a hit and a walk and recording three strikeouts. It's not much, but it's a start.
It's not much, but it's also not a HR and a loss, either!
I'm sure they're building up his innings spring training style. A very nice start. I think they want to bring him up in September. They might shut down Berrios at some point to prevent him from jumping his innings too much.
He pitched 185 innings last year so I guess shut him down if he reaches 225.
I seriously doubt they'd let him get to 225 since no Twins pitcher has gotten to 225+ since Johan in his second Cy Young season of 2006 when he had 233. Probably more like 210 or so since getting to 200+ is considered a lot of innings even if it isn't a big increase from the year before. They might not even shut him down altogether but just keep him from going much past 100 pitches or have him skip a start here or there.
He's at 146 innings this year in 23 starts. He has nine or ten starts left so to reach 225 he needs to average 7.9 to 8.7 innings per start to reach 225, considerably above his current average of 6.3 innings per start. I don't think he is shut down or skips starts. With ten more starts, he projects to finish at 209 innings.
I wonder if they might bring up someone in September and go to a 6 man rotation (barring injuries) just to eliminate one of those starts and to get a good look at someone like Gonsalves (who is looking really good lately).
Of interest to our little slice of the interwebz: Pretty cool obituary for Mr. Shea.
