January 3, 2018: A Little Off The Top

I've seen this around the interwebs recently. Ignoring the fact that it's not really theirs to give, but:

Should Minnesota give the Northwest Angle to Canada?

    1. interesting. b-r's defensive stats seem to really like him. Not sure how sustainable his 2018 dWAR was, but there's a lot to be said for a player who consistently puts up 2-3 rWAR seasons at a low price. Fangraphs sees all of his wins above average value coming from baserunning and defense, however, with his offensive net still negative. 😐

You'd like to see a power-position player be a little better than a league-average hitter, but....

      1. I think a lot of their thinking comes from the second half of the paragraph, where Kepler ends up playing some center field if Buxton ends up being a disaster or gets hurt.

        1. I'd have to see him in CF more to decide that. I think a big chunk of Max's defensive prowess is he plays the foul line so well -- he has good awareness of his territory. Playing wide open all-out CF may or may not be his best defense.

      2. OAA approves of his fielding too, at +10 outs. The best this year was a tie between Bader and Inciarte at +21. His sprint speed isn't that good however, at only 27.9 ft/s. Buxton still leads at 30.5 ft/s with Bader at 29.9 ft/s. But, Inciarte is also 27.9 ft/s in a 14-way tie at 175th.

  1. Straight up give it to them? Nah.

Swapsies? I'm listening. I'll open the bidding at all of Niagara Falls.

      1. Gary Gietti - nice. I like the guy that says Bob Allison - I don't think they wore sloppy pants or had Gatorade back then.
