I still use that line when I notice Mrs. Runner contemplating something -- "What are you sinking about?"
As my dad used to say:
Hooray, hooray, the first of May!
Outdoor loving starts today!
Back at the desk after my little 3 day getaway to Duluth. Castle Danger was a pretty cool taproom and the product was great. Staff wasn't too excited about talking to anyone, but on a Sunday afternoon I may have gotten the B squad. Listened to some cool local bands on Monday at Bent Paddle as part of a week long Homegrown Music festival. Beer was great, the new taproom is spectacular and the beer tenders were super cool and friendly. The first band had some french horns in it. Still not sure about that! The other bands were fun and pretty good. The weather sucked, but I really didn't care as it was just a much needed break away from the grind. The one thing I was disappointed in was the dining scene. Staff in general at all the restaurants were not on point. Food was ok. Best thing I had was some smoked salmon at a tiny little joint called Russ Kendall's in Knife River. Owner was super cool and informative.
I used to play the French horn. French horns are cool.
Bearly?
Did you get to OMC smokehouse? (it's a block from Bent Paddle). That place is amazing. Generally I stay away from the restaurants at Canal Park, too focused on tourists, grandmas, and grandkids (not that there's anything wrong with grandma or their grandkids, it just leads to a different restaurant experience). Lincoln Park is where it's at for Duluth.
Two Harbors doesn't have a lot of great restaurants that I have heard/know about. Also I have found the staff at Castle Danger not so open to talking, but I have been there during busier times.
I'll have to check out that Knife River joint next time I'm up there.
I second the OMC recommendation.
I really wanted to get to OMC, but the night we were heading to Bent Paddle, my better half wasn't feeling smokehouse type food. Grrrr. We decided to go to the Iron Works joint instead. Place has potential, but it did not wow me. With the daughter going to UMD next year, we will get to OMC a few times I am sure!
Probably the best sit down place we ate at was on the way up. Doc's in Sturgeon Lake. Came in with low expectations and it was pretty darn good!
I end up in Two Harbors every month or two for work, and I stop at Russ Kendall's every time.
I used to grouse hunt in the woods by Finland. I'd drive up and spend the night in a 2H motel, breakfast at Judy's (eggs+toast, have them fill my Thermos), and then head up the trail. Living in CT has put a dent in my grouse-hunting.
Hey, I might be in CT soon. Unfortunately, I think it's gonna be an in and out thing.
Seeing this on the sidebar without context is, uhh, something.
well, yeah.
Be happy to help quiff the quaff with a local (Hanging Hills, Thomas Hooker, Captain Lawrence, Two Roads) if you are in the area. And Bear's Burnt Ends.
still working out the details. will check if feasible.
Oh, Kendall’s smoked salmon is effing amazing. Love that joint.
Back in the day, I was running board while John Focke was doing play by play of every Albert Lea high school sport. I knew he was too good for a small town AM radio station. Today it was announced he is the new radio play by play voice for the Charlotte Hornets. I am so excited for him.
I had heard Sloane Martin was replacing Focke as the Lynx PBP person but didn't know why Focke was leaving so good news all around.
May day! May day!
Classic! Thanks!
