  1. Visited with the local card shop owner; last week he attended a Cards game and met with a Topps representative there. Topps is pretty irked with MLB over their players' weekend jerseys, because Topps gets a number of these which they cut up and embed in baseball cards -- unfortunately, with the monochromatic white or black uniforms, there will be a lot of confusion/disappointment. The uniforms are not team colors, and if you got a special patch card with a portion of a number or name on it, it's the same color as the uniform so it doesn't stand out at all! Ugly on the field, ugly as a collectible.

    1. I keep thinking of all the levels of bureaucracy something like that must have to pass through, and the number of people who either really thought those uniforms were a good idea or knew they weren't but didn't want to say anything.

      1. They do this to sell more jerseys right? (I get the whole issue probably creates more clicks and web site impressions too). But who's going to buy those? I'd love to see sales breakdowns, is there really a market for all this stuff? I rarely see these and those military-inspired jerseys anywhere.

    2. I wonder if the people making these decisions are actually fans and would ever wear a jersey.

    3. On the subject of cardboard: If a guy were looking for, say, a dozen unopened packs of Seventies-to-early Nineties baseball cards for pure entertainment value along the lines of “Let’s Remember Some Guys,” where would you suggest looking?

Ideally, I could choose the packs from sets with appealing designs (i.e., not ‘81 or ’84 Topps, ‘87 or ‘91 Fleer, ‘91 Donruss, any “reborn” Bowman card ever ...) but I’m not about to get too picky.

  2. Reminds me of the old demotivational poster "Meetings: None of us is as dumb as all of us".

  3. The Florida State League has followed the lead of the Gulf Coast League and cancelled the remainder of its season and its playoffs due to the threat of Hurricane Dorian.

  4. I bought Car Mechanic Simulator today for my Xbox because it looked like it might be fun to video game build cars with my son. We've been messing around in it for an hour and I am (not) ashamed to admit I will probably spend more time with this game than I would have expected.

    1. That looks like a lot of fun.

I'm thinking I'm going to do the rear diff seal and new fluid on my truck before too long. Mostly because I know it needs done eventually and I'm feeling like I wanna do something to the truck.

      1. Get the game and do it there instead. I played it for like four hours last night. My son doesn't care as much about the working on cars part but there are a couple of places to drive around and he got a kick out of that.

I need to think about buying a crappy, old truck someday. The cars we have now are way too reliable and I never get to do anything more than change the air filter.

        1. I got FARMTRUCK* for $800 on CL. He's been a fantastic addition to the family. I am slowly working my way through things. Big one is complete brake replacement and new shocks. I'd like to be able to stop in a much shorter distance.

And if I could get the radio to work, that'd be nice too.

          1. Given the vintage, I assume you have power brakes, perhaps even with discs on the front? I really dug the simplicity of an all-manual truck when I bought mine — I really don’t care about power steering, or needing to set the choke in cool/cold weather — but have reassessed the wisdom of manual drum brakes now that I’m a father. Fortunately, I can’t drive the truck anywhere with the oil leak, so I’m not tempted to get myself into trouble.

            1. Disc front/drum rear, though I think I'm stopping entirely with the front at the moment.

I'm going new rotors, calipers, pads, drums and shoes.

        2. If you want to come up and help replace the rear main seal on my ‘67 F100, you’re more than welcome. I’ve been successfully avoiding the job for years now, mainly because the idea of dropping that transmission in my driveway solo makes me want to throw up.

    1. First time exposure. Not sure what I’m *supposed* to feel about this, but good Lord did I enjoy it!

    2. I did not realize until trying to find how it was scored that Lenny Randle was the guy that blew the ball foul.

      1. We had more than one trade with the Rangers during Randle's time in the bigs, and I always have to think twice if he ever was a Twin during his career. The answer is no, btw.

    3. Three years later, Randle attacked his manager, Frank Lucchesi, over a playing time dispute. Lucchesi was hospitalized with a cheekbone fractured in three places, which necessitated plastic surgery. Randle lost a bit under 30% of his salary between the fine and a thirty-game suspension. Texas traded Randall to the Mets, but Lucchesi was also fired in late June. Oddly enough, he returned to coach third base for Texas in 1979–80. He also was the Cubs’ interim manager after Gene Michael was fired in 1987. Lucchesi died two months ago.

    4. My favorite part is how both Johnson and Randle continue the play after the bodycheck. Randle keeps running to first like maybe no one noticed and he'll be called safe, and Johnson holds on to the ball(!) and is ready to try and throw him out except his first baseman is too busy tackling the runner.
