Kirby Puckett Region: #4 vs. #13

4. Scott Erickson Throws No-Hitter

I definitely was not paying attention to the Twins in April of 1994.  More impressive than Eric Milton's and Francisco Liriano's no-hitters.  Just four walks allowed and not facing the getaway day lineup.

13. Mike Pagliarulo's Pinch-Hit Homer in ALCS

I have zero recollection of this, even though I'm sure I watched it.  But man, coming off the bench on the road in extras to help put the series up two games to one?  This should be more well-known.

  1. Erickson did not regain the magic of the '91 season that year. He had an extra day of rest but was lit up by the Brewers this time, giving up seven runs in his five innings.

  2. My general rule is that any game-altering event in the postseason gets my vote.

Cole had a pretty bad jump on that fly ball. I wonder if he didn’t get a good read on the ball off the bat, or knew he could get to it and wanted to be sure he was tracking it through the lights. Either way, Meares certainly made that catch a lot more dramatic.

    1. Yeah, that's my general rule too. Gladden's grand slam was great, but the Twins were probably going to win it anyway. But it was the nail in the coffin. I didn't include some great postseason moments that didn't really alter the game, but maybe some will come up as #11 seeds.

  3. Erickson led the AL in hits allowed in '93 and was eighth in the AL in '94 despite starting just 23 games and giving up hits in just 22 of them. He allowed 10.9 hits/9 in '93 and 10.8 in '94. Definitely one of the least likely no-hitters ever considering how hittable he was.
