July 26, 2020: International Delegation

Taking advantage of a window that comes every 26 months, three nations will have crafts heading to Mars. The UAE's recently launched Hope orbiter, China's even more recently launched Tianwen-1, and NASA's soon to be launched Perseverance should all be arriving at the red planet in February. That's pretty cool.

  1. i think the game log is open today if someone is bored.

  2. Dear meat, et al

I want to try salmon on planks on the grill.

Do you have any tips? Im curious about maybe trying a glaze perhaps?

    1. From a buddy of mine two weeks ago:

My recipe for glaze when I cook on soaked planks on the grill

      Olive Oil
      Garlic
      Chili powder
      Honey
      Teriyaki sauce

Serve with brown rice. Never fails.

      1. Totally - honey and spice is always the right choice.

There is an amazing honey mustard glaze that dr. chop always makes when salmon is roasted in the oven - basically a bit of honey and some dijon whipped together. Bread crumbs on top browned under the broiler really elevate that one to *chefs kiss* ooh la la.

My standard go to is honey drizzled on, brown sugar on top of the honey, and a dash (or more) of cayenne. Never fails. The brine, however, is the important part. I use meathead goldwyn's brine - boil / heat up some water, pour into glass measuring cup to the 1/2 cup mark and add any kind of salt until the water line rises to the 3/4 cup mark. Then dilute into 1/2 gallon of water, add 1/4 cup sugar, a bunch of black pepper and garlic powder, (I also use a heavy dose of soy sauce in the brine) and let sit for 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on how thick the cuts are - i used two sides of fish and soaked them for about 2 hours - Rinse the fish really well and then leave out to dry out a bit under a fan. Drying the fish will make your glaze stick much better when cooking / smoking.

tai sweet chili sauce straight out of the jar would be great as well. Oh, and that john hardy's bbq sauce fish was o u t s t a n d i n g .

  3. So, apparently when a small business applies for a PPP loan, about all they have to provide to the get the initial $10,000 government payment (the grant portion that precedes the loan portion) is a tax ID number and a bank account. This was done to get stimulus money into the public's hands ASAP, but it may be turning into one of the biggest fraud opportunities in American history. Banks are spotting this fraud because suddenly people are opening "business" accounts that quickly get the $10,000 deposit, then the accounts get emptied out and closed. It's good there was so much oversight included in the CARES Act so this kind of thing won't happen.

    1. I don't know how it's being run now, but that certainly is not an accurate portrayal of what my small business went through to get the loans. We had to establish payroll history and the amount we could get was tied to our past payroll - getting funds would have been impossible without a track record of payments. And I can't imagine the bank would have made these loans either, since they'd be the ones holding the bag.

    2. Twayn, you are describing the EIDL loan from the SBA. The PPP is quite different.

  4. Went on a 20-mile bike ride with my wife today. We drove out to St Boni and rode to Mayer and back. Paved and mainly shady.

        1. When you rode through Mound, you traveled about 200 yards from my boyhood home.

            1. For a bit. Born in Mpls, moved to Mound during school years, returned to Mpls for college and never returned.

              1. West side of Minnetonka is interesting. Weird combination of rich lake homes and old small towns being eaten by sprawl.

                1. Oh no doubt and it's changed a lot since the 38 years since I lived there. My favorite story about how weird Mound is that in the 1988 presidential primary Pat Robertson won the Republican primary and Jesse Jackson won the Democratic primary.

    1. Just came here to query this... Also, yesterday when I looked for mlb scores it didn't show me Minnesota's.

      What the heck?

    1. derp. I've meant to make some of these calls and then life........ .... .... ... one day.. .. . .
