  1. The last two times I was in London I got to see Ralph Fiennes live in Ibsen plays Brand and Romersholm.

Today he is now streaming on Netflix in The Dig. Based on a true story.

  2. Last night at the joint, I was in the kitchen and made some comment that was a Beastie Boys lyric. One of my main cooks, who is 21, looked at me weird and when I asked if he knew the reference, he said no. I said Beastie Boys and he still looked puzzled. I was flabbergasted that he never heard of the Beastie Boys, so I gave him some overnight homework. I told him to listen to Paul's Boutique and Hello Nasty. Fast forward to this morning and when I walk into the joint, Hello Nasty is playing in the kitchen. Of course, he absolutely loves the vibe of that record. Just doing my part to pass on some culture to the next generation.

    1. The best part of having kids get older is watching a movie or show with them that I've been quoting for years and having the lightbulb light up for them.

      1. We've been doing this thing...often...where I will make a reference or movie quote and follow it up with "Classic!" My 11-year old keeps pointing out, irritated, how everything seems to be a "classic." It's fun.
She keeps saying that she died during swimming practice or after going out for a short walk, or whathaveyou. I have used both: "Mostly dead" and "I got better!" and then we had to see those movies because those definitely were classics.

      2. We were playing a card game with my teenager last night when I made a Beavis & Butt-Head reference. It is exactly his type of humor, for better or worse, and he was near tears laughing at Cornholio.

      3. I love playing my music for TBS . She loves Dolly, particularly "Jolene" and "Islands in the Stream", and The White Stripes. "There's Jack! And there's Meg with her peppermint drum!"

        1. I've done whole evenings of "music education" for my children.

Usually it's oldies - a night of Buddy Holly, another of Ray Charles - but sometimes it's other fun stuff from my childhood, like Animaniacs or Veggietales or old Radio AAHS songs. It's a great excuse to re-live my childhood and share with them.

          1. Not a whole lot of overlap between Runner daughter and I, but I did give her an appreciation of soundtrack music, and we have been to a couple They Might Be Giants concerts together.

          2. We played a lot of Ray Charles on long car trips when the kids were little.

            "Play Hit Road Jack!!!"

            1. Every family drive to Omaha involved Papa Young listening to the entirety of Born to Run with "Thunder Road" starting before we even reached 35W.

          3. Both of the daughters were almost as depressed about John Prine passing as I was, so I guess we taught them a little music appreciation.

    2. Bold move starting him off with Paul's Boutique. I probably would've started with Ill Communication. Hello Nasty second. Now that you got him hooked, blow his mind with Paul's Boutique.

      1. Ill Communication is the next suggestion and I assumed that one would blow his mind. He did tell me he liked Hello Nasty much better than Paul's Boutique. I told him to get back to me in a few months after coming back to it a few times.

I know we don't have a lot of Weezer fans on here, but I was amused at the title of their new album, OK Human.

  3. It turns out I did have a reaction to the second COVID shot. Last night I had the worst chill of my life. No matter how hot I made the room or how many blankets I put on I simply could not get warm. That went away sometime in the night. This morning I just have a headache and not much energy. They tell me this is a classic reaction to the shot, and that a lot of people have it. I wish they'd told me that earlier. Not that I would have refused the shot--it just would have been nice to know what to expect.

    1. My daughter had her first shot on Saturday. Temp of 103 and chills. Lasted about twenty-four hours. Side effects are supposed to be worse for younger people.

      1. I had not heard that! Good to know.

Re: Shingrix. I had no reaction to either. My wife was knocked off her feet for a day by the second.

She has a bunch of mild allergies, whereas I have none. That might be a big part of the difference between us on how we react to injections.

    2. One of my coworkers had his first shot yesterday (he's about your age). Took a half day today because he also has the chills and a splitting headache (in addition to the arm pain).

    3. The symptoms come on very suddenly. The good news is that they go away almost as suddenly. I feel much better now, just really tired. But I wouldn't have gone to the basketball game in Onida last night if they'd told me there was a pretty good chance of this happening.

  4. Got an email from AT&T TV: "We noticed that your account was charged an incorrect amount for your Regional Sports Network fee." End result: $42.84 (!)

We haven't had AT&T TV for four months now. Merry Christmas late

  5. I'm feeling better about the insurance claim on the Santa Fe. I spoke with an adjuster today and we went over all the options on the vehicle and we got $300 added to the value for options they missed in the appraisal. I can file repair/maintenance receipts from the last year (@ $2700) to get another upward adjustment, but I don't know what percentage of the costs they'll allow yet. I'm hoping we can get the valuation up to $7500, but I'll be happy with anything over $7200. It's a hassle to have to buy a car this time of year, but with the pandemic it turns out that demand is lower and inventory is bigger than usual so I should get decent replacement value this time around.

  6. Whoa!
