Minor Details: Games of June 16

Chandler Shepherd and three relievers lead the Saints.  Jermaine Palacios and Chris Vallimont lead the Wind Surge.  Michael Helman delivers for the Kernels.

ST. PAUL 2, IOWA 0 IN ST. PAUL

The Saints scored single runs in the first and seventh and four pitchers took it from there.

Batting star:  Tomas Telis was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.

Pitching stars:  Chandler Shepherd pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks and striking out three.  Ian Hamilton struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Juan Minaya retired all four men he faced, striking out one.  Derek Law pitched 1.2 perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Dee Strange-Gordon was 2-for-4.  Matt Swarmer pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks and striking out three.

Good stats:  Hamilton has an ERA of 1.15.

Bad stats:  Daniel Descalso was 1-for-4 and is batting .074.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 and is batting .091.  Jimmy Kerrigan was 1-for-3 and is batting .198.  Shepherd lowered his ERA to 6.48.

Record:  The Saints are 18-20, in fourth place in the AAA East-Midwest, 8.5 games behind Omaha.

WICHITA 8, SPRINGFIELD 2 IN WICHITA

The Wind Surge scored three in the first and the lead was never less than three.

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 4-for-5 with two home runs (his sixth and seventh), a double, three runs, and three RBIs.  Roy Morales was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Ernie De La Trinidad was 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Chris Vallimont struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.  Jason Garcia struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Jovani Moran pitched a perfect inning, striking out all three men he faced.

Opposition stars:  Nick Plummer was 2-for-4 with a double.  Luken Baker was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighth), a walk, and two runs.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 1-for-4 and is batting .313.  De La Trinidad is batting .308.  Palacios is batting .304.  Garcia has an ERA of zero.  Moran has an ERA of 0.74.  Zach Neff gave up a run in two innings and has an ERA of 2.53.

Bad stats:  None.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 22-16, in first place in the AA Central-North, a half game ahead of Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 4, SOUTH BEND 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels trailed 3-1 going to the bottom of the ninth.  One run was walked in and Michael Helman hit a two-run double to win it.

Batting star:  Wander Javier was 1-for-3 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Jordan Gore struck out four in three perfect innings.  Jonathan Cheshire pitched a scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Yonathan Perlaza was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Edmond Americaan was 2-for-4.  Matteo Bocchi pitched four shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out three.

Starter:  Jon Olsen struck out five in five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks.

Good stats:  None.

Bad stats:  Chris Williams was 1-for-3 and is batting .100.  Olsen has an ERA of 5.00.

Record:  The Kernels are 18-20, tied for third with Beloit and Wisconsin, 6.5 games behind Quad Cities.

LAKELAND AT FORT MYERS

Rained out.  Will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

  1. Until this week, I had no idea the Twins' AA team was A)in Wichita, B) Called teh Storm Wind Surge, C)That they used to be the New Orleans Baby Cakes, or D) That the Zephyrs changed their name.

    Shame, The Zephyrs was a Tier I name.
