August 12, 2021: The Food Court

That's what we jokingly call our backyard as we have a little bit for everybody. Plenty of food for the birds. Plenty of spilled bird food for the squirrels. Plenty of compost for the worms (some of which we raised). Plenty of worms for the robins. Even some produce stolen by other unknown backyard creatures.

  1. Given his negative WAR, the Twins have a pretty solid case in any grievance of they choose to cut him. I still believe his anti-vax idiocy that brought Covid to the clubhouse is what actually tanked the season. I'm sure his teammates were thrilled to be playing shorthanded with a bunch of double-headers because of him.

    1. I agree. The fact that he's also doubling down after such a miserable season performance on his part and a surge nationwide among the unvaccinated, makes me think there may still be issues internally as well.

  2. Just curious: Is anyone excited about the "Field of Dreams" game? I'm not. I mean, I'm not opposed to it. It just doesn't do anything for me. What do other people think?

    1. Nope, I completely agree. The movie is MAYBE my tenth favorite baseball movie (Major League, The Natural, The Sandlot, The Bad News Bears, Bull Durham, 42, Mr. Baseball, Moneyball, and A League of Their Own are pretty securely above it, I'm probably forgetting other baseball movies, too). I think there is a certain type of person with whom the movie really resonates, but it isn't me.

It's way better than Fever Pitch and Trouble With the Curve, though, so it's got that going for it.

      1. It's way better than Fever Pitch...

Did you ever see the soccer version of Fever Pitch? It's actually what the Neil Hornsby book was based on but swap out the Red Sox for Arsenal. Not a great movie but decent. Also was also filmed in the neighborhood of Arsenal's old soccer stadium and it's cool to see it and the neighborhood around it. I think it streams on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Oh and Everybody Wants Some is a fun movie that has a baseball background.

      1. The White Sox being involved makes perfect sense. The Yankees are involved because MLB thinks the Yankees have to be involved in everything.

        1. I dialed in for an inning but then realized why John/Suzyn creep me out and logged off (that and Judge 3-run HR - leader in I'wegian MLB RBIs).

        2. In the movie, Ray's dad was a Yankme minor leaguer (that the uniform he's wearing when they play catch).

    2. Well it's generating some buzz, which baseball needs desperately. There is an article in Forbes that Fox is super happy with it and expects good ratings, especially for a Thursday in August. Also look for more games like this as well as MLB may do other movie tie-ins (Bull Durham?) and other one-off games at interesting venues. I guess the question is when will MLB run it into the ground much like NHL did with the New Years Day outside game moprhing into the "outdoor stadium series?"

      1. In the analysis of the effects of the pandemic, I've seen it said that the NHL is a league whose bottom line is much more dependent on ticket sales than the other large men's leagues. Creating more outdoor games makes sense in that context. Blues-Wild at Target Field won't do great TV ratings, but it'll be a sellout at premium prices.

MLB/NFL/NBA have less to gain in that sense? So maybe it'll be less likely to reach oversaturation?

On the other hand, never underestimate greed.

      2. Looking forward to the Brewster’s Millions game, where one lucky minor league team gets to play the Yankees, with the outcome deciding whether Manfred gets to terminate the team’s affiliation agreement.

          1. Same here. Then was horrified at the fact that Manfred probably googles his name and came across CH's post and assigned a staffer to look into the idea.

      1. I'm listening to the radio broadcast. There's only one other game going on, and that one is 11-1 in the seventh.

  3. Early farm report:

St. Paul leads Indianapolis 3-1 in the fifth. Nick Gordon is 2-for-3 with a home run. Chandler Shepherd has gone all the way for the Saints so far.
Wichita leads Tulsa 3-0 in the third. Trey Cabbage and Spencer Steer have each homered. Chris Vallimont has struck out three in two perfect innings.
Cedar Rapids leads Peoria 2-1 in the fourth. Louis Varland has given up one run in three innings so far, raising his ERA to 1.09.
Fort Myers at Bradenton was rained out.
