I have been so far removed from new music lately. Like many things, I will blame the pandemic. The four of us have all been in the house together for going on 18 months now. Childcare & work means I don't get to put my headphones in and just work while exploring new music. I need to be able to hear for yells, cries, crashes, etc. A lack of commute is also severely cutting into my music time.
How have you all stayed current on music?
PS - I do know that Sturgill's new album dropped today.
I love this - Galya Bisengalieva has a drone ambient album out about the disappearance of the Aral Sea and the recovery efforts.
It's really hard to explain why an album like this sticks out for me, but I keep coming back and listening to it. It's just turbulent enough to keep my attention.
When I saw the title, I thought "(Out of time)" so that probably answers your question on how well I keep up with current music.
One of my favorite minimalist ambient tracks is this one
I like it.
I use an app, Music Harbor, to keep track of new releases. The app allows me to track specific artists’ releases (album, EPs, music videos, and singles), and recently added the ability to track all releases on specific labels, too. (This is pretty sweet — I listen to almost every release on ECM and ACT, and it’s pushed me to listen to more stuff released by Edition.) Given the kind of music I listen to, many of the artists I follow do a fair amount of guesting on other artists’ albums as sidemen or soloists, and the app catches those guest appearances, too.
I do make a weekly habit of listening to the custom New Music playlist complied for me by some algorithm on my preferred steaming service. But Music Harbor ensures I don’t miss anything, and has introduced me to other artists who are associated with musicians (and now labels) I already follow.
I haven't done a random ten list in a long time, and since I've been out of touch with current music for quite a while, this seems the perfect time to do one:
1. "Heard It In a Love Song"--Marshall Tucker Band
2. "Reminiscing"--Little River Band
3. "Empty Garden"--Elton John
4. "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do"--ABBA
5. "Midnight Train to Georgia"--Gladys Knight and the Pips
6. "The Tide Is High"--Blondie
7. "If You Know What I Mean"--Neil Diamond
8. "Looks Like We Made It"--Barry Manilow
9. "And I Love You So"--Don McLean
10. "Angie" --The Rolling Stones
I have 8 of 10 on my iPod.
01. "Riding Dirty" – Obnox – Louder Space
02. "Like Blood Does" – Cymbals Eat Guitars – Why There Are Mountains
03. "Broke" – Kye Kye – Young Love
04. "The King's Horses" – Olivia Chaney – The Mark Radcliffe Folk Sessions
05. "The Final Cut" – Pink Floyd – The Final Cut
06. "Cigarette" – Marika Hackman – I'm Not Your Man
07. "Swizz Beatz" – Young Thug – No, My Name Is JEFFERY
08. "Pin" – Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Fever To Tell
