  1. We've got ourselves a proper Stl Layer Cake going here: a steady drizzle yesterday going into sleet overnight and then pile the snow on top. 10"-12"? I'll believe it when I see it...

        1. Meanwhile out west, we've gone from one of the wettest Decembers on record and deep snow packs to one of the driest Januaries, and Sierra snow packs back down to around the long-run average for this time of year.

We could use a whole lot of what you are getting.

          1. Well, 4"-5" on the ground, with possibly as much or more later this evening (depending on which of the dozen forecasts you pick); thankfully, with temps touching 60° yesterday, the bottom layer isn't ice so shoveling to bare concrete is achievable

    1. I was showing the Poissonnière highlights of the ECC women’s semi-final round last night. I assume I can only stream the Olympic curling stuff on Peacock?

      1. Yeah, as far as I know its only on the Peacock. I believe its only $5 if you don't have something like a Directv login, though. There is also the Scotties going on right now on ESPN, which you probably have access to with your D+ account.

    1. What they don't get, and same went with Cleveland Guardians, is that fans like to reduce the team name to one or two syllables. Both Commanders and Guardians are really difficult to reduce to a meaningful 1 syllable nickname.

Timberwolves is three syllables but can easily be reduced to T-Wolves or Wolves (Nationals - Nats is another good example, Buccaneers- Bucs is another). What do you casually call the Commanders? The Coms? The Ders? Maybe it will be a related name much like some people will refer to the Pittsburgh Pirates as the Bucs.

        1. It's kinda dumb but probably end up being the common usage. I guess it's no different than The Vikes.

      1. I remember when the Timberwolves where christened, and the pundits complained about it's length and compared it unfavorably to the Supersonics, but yeah, who doesn't just use a nickname anyway?

  2. On the one hand, 9 championships in 11 years for my alma mater, w00t!

On the other hand, college football is a cesspool and any compensation given to the indentured servants is met with crap like this.

    1. It's that an SEC coach worried about the big business of college football?! We know they won't be hurt by this.

  3. Pretty fun article about Morneau's outdoor hockey rink on the Athletic today.

This year has been my most successful rink build for my son yet but let me tell you it has nothing on what the Mountie has put together.

        1. For real though, any advice on fixing the ice after it gets all beat up? I just run more water, but sometimes that doesn't work the best?

          1. /cracks knuckles

If only someone in the Citizenry used to drive a Zamboni....

I think maybe a mop and bucket of hot (not boiling) water would work fairly well, depending how deep the cuts are

            1. They get pretty deep a lot of the time. More to the point though, I'm usually not doing spot-fixes, it's really the whole surface that needs attention.

I'm guessing that a better first-freeze would help, but as mentioned, the yard slopes, and we end up with a fair number of leaks, that, after they freeze, move further up the line, so the ice is built bit by bit, not all at once.

              1. Without a blade to help take off the surface level scratches, hot water's gonna be your best bet. It'll lightly melt-refreeze the top layer, as well as hold less dissolved gas so the resultant ice is harder & clearer.

A tip we used to use on real deep gouges, like where the figure skaters used their toe-picks, is to take a handful of slush and pack it in, then put the hot water on it.

                1. Everything Mags says. I have one bad corner but otherwise we are ok.

One thing I learned is do not let snow stay for very long. Big mistake.

                  1. Also be wary of spraying it down like a garden with a big fan of particles. It'll get pebbly, that's why they do curling sheets the way they do.

You will want a mop or something else soft and flat to smooth out the new water. That's why Zambonis have the felt pad they drag.

    1. This is year 2 of us doing an outdoor rink. Our is pretty small (about 25'x40'), and our property slopes pretty badly so that the southwest corner of the rink is completely unusable. But hey, there's skatable ice in our backyard and the kids (and I) love it.

    1. One of my colleagues drove up for it. She was dreading the weather a bit (she’s originally from Maryland) but took it as an opportunity to test herself against the elements.

    2. It's a small, dumb hill to die on, but I'm still mad that Big V's is gone now thanks to the stadium.

      1. That is a small hill since Big V's isn't gone due to the stadium. It's under new ownership and called Midway Saloon. Unless I am thinking of a different place.

        1. The building is still there, but it's not Vic's anymore. I heard with the stadium coming he he got a deal he couldn't refuse becuase it was a hot property now.

(And I'm 99% joking anyway, I really would love to get to a game there eventually)

    3. Papa Young and both my brothers were there, but the absolute clunker they played against Canada convinced me not to hunt for a ticket.
