Twins went and signed the biggest free agent of the off season. That's a heck of a thing.
2 $100M+ contracts in one offseason.
I checked Trade Rumors just before going to sleep... just missed.
I am so glad about this signing. It us straight up the way it is supposed to work when you don't have an internal guy and you want to win. Throw money at then. Short term is perfect. More money now, savings and flexibility later.
And it sure shuts me up about Jim becoming Carl.
For now.
I mean, I get why everyone was worried, but I also kinda don't. They just traded away a first round pick for a starting pitcher a week or two ago. There was no way they were just going to be like "whelp! Too rich for my blood! *Exaggerated wink*"
Something was going to happen. I still think something will happen on top of this.
Clearing Donaldson's contract was a big sign they wanted a different large contract. The payroll with Donaldson wasn't above previous levels and this isn't Cleveland.
I wasn't so much nervous that they weren't trying to do something. I was more nervous that they were possibly going to fall short of their own expectations this off season. They tend to wait out the market, looking for value. When you do that, it sometimes backfires. So happy my nerves were wrong in this case.
From Twins Daily:
"Correa’s three-year deal comes with player opt-outs after year one and year two, allowing Correa to test the waters of free agency if he wishes. "
👀
The MLB article has a good explanation of why that is not a bad thing.
Exactly. It seemed like they were suddenly stuck in bidding wars to sign Story and trade for pitching. They could do everything right in those circumstances and still come up short, and then they’d really have been in a pickle. I’d love to know when they pivoted to talking to Correa.
I worry more about FAs not wanting to go to MN
Both/and, not either/or.
My guess is that, at some point, they told Boras something like, "Look, we can't do the long-term deal you want, but if you find out you can't get that, we'll do the AAV you want over a shorter term." And at some point, Boras realized the long-term deal wasn't going to be there and came back to the Twins.
The agent switch part of this is interesting too. Boras stands to make more next contract...
My confidence in this front office has waned, based on the number of former Twins (and minors) players contributing on other teams. So the idea that they'd try but fall short on FA signings, for whatever reason, was concerning.
I'm excited, but I'm also still wondering who is going to pitch.
Montas and Manaea, hopefully.
Yes, please.
This would hurt, and I don’t think Oakland would want to package both their pitchers in a single deal. But it seems like Falvey & Levine are breaking any preconceptions about what is possible right now.
Martin? Austin Martin?
Yep. They're proposing to break up Martin & Lewis
Martin and Wood-Richardson was our entire haul for Berrios, who would look pretty good in the starting rotation right now.
Love the signing of Correa but you can’t buy a house and not put furniture in it. Twins need to get more starting pitching now.
I think he means "shouldn't" there, no "can't" because otherwise he's wrong.
Snapchat from my daughter in the middle of the night (from NYC): "just woke up to two drunk idiots trying to get into my apartment from the fire escape. I told them they were on the wrong fire escape. They started yelling 'white privilege!'"
That's some careful diction. Grounders need not be outs.
But are at high rates, typically.
That kind of thinking is how pitch-to-contact got started.
Oof, this take didn't age well as regards to Everton and Arsenal. If you scroll higher, you can see I contributed to the Arsenal inanity.
Fulham are still top of the Championship, 8 points clear.
Haven't they scored at least 5 goals on the road(!) four or five times this season? I'm going to end up with Mitro in my fantasy squad week one next year yet again, but this time might not actually regret it if Silva keeps them playing attacking football unlike the ridiculously well-dressed Scott Parker.
They've won 7-0 on the road twice
I was definitely joking about Everton (any time they win, like last Thursday, many people write "We may never lose again" on the forums), but every Everton fan knew that hiring the Fat Spanish Waiter was going to bring nothing but pain and misery. If you go back to last summer, someone (The Athletic maybe) did a survey of how much each fanbase was looking forward to the 2021-22 season. Everton fans were the second least-optimistic with only Newcastle below (because they didn't realize they were about to be saved by the Saudis). The Leeds result yesterday suhucked for Everton. I don't want a head-to-head fight with wormeating Sean Dyche and his hideous route one bunker ball for 17th. because his team is built for grinding out stupid results. Leeds need to stay in the relegation scrap.
Twins/Correa made the top of the hour national radio news blurb, so I guess this qualifies a splash
I was trying to think of a time when the Twins had signed a free agent of this magnitude who wasn't already part of their team, and I couldn't think of one.
Donaldson?
Spamtowner boys at least match the girls by making the state tournament again. Last hurrah for Coach Fads.
Cougars also dancing, though I hope it’s not Coach Madson’s last hurrah. His son Brogan, the starting PG, is but a freshman. East loses their leading scorer BJ Omat (who is going to UND next year), but will still have some nice underclassmen returning.
Heady times in Wolves land
Wolves (42-30) have now guaranteed themselves a winning record for the 2nd time since 04/05 & 9th time in their 33-year franchise history.
FYI, Mac Wilson played the request and also referenced salty Sox fans on the radio:
Reading White Sox fans getting all pissy after the Correa signing, how about Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night? (which also qualifies as a banger, @nmcoleman)
What the?!

Welcome to New York, I guess.
Yankees fans:
we have a sidearmer now!
Gets grounders, eh?
Glen Taylor will be thrilled
