  1. The MNUFC Loons don't get a lot of attention in these parts but I wanted to let everyone know that they have quietly put together a pretty good season. Right now the Loons are in 3rd place in Western Conference, one point ahead of Dallas but with 2 games in hand. Moving up to 2nd or 1st is probably not possible, but a 3rd seed is a good place to be for the playoffs. Over the last two months the Loons have been playing the best soccer in the league with the most points, tied with most wins, and 3rd in most goals since the end of June.

Saturday's win was a case study in their recent resiliency and gumption. Houston is a lower table team and the Loons had just come off a nice win over 2nd place Austin, so a classic trap game. Plus Houston's strategy was to definitely take the air out of the ball as they dwaddled before every free kick, throw-in etc. Loons outplayed Houston the whole game but couldn't quite finish and put the ball in the net. No goals at half time. After letting in a well deserved goal early in the second half, the Loons scored two goals the last 10 minutes our so to gut out the victory and we all got to sing Wonderwall.

This could be a dangerous team in the playoffs, LAFC may be tough to overcome in Conference but should be fun to watch at the very least.

    1. I keep meaning to pay attention but I keep forgetting to check when there are games, so thanks for the reminder.

    2. Now look here... I've watched a Loons game before. It was a playoff game, and just like every other Minnesota sports team, they blew it in painful fashion at the last minute. I'm not falling for any of this stuff, and shame on you for trying!

    3. Even if it is a sport that I don't enjoy as much as others, I have no problem being supportive of their fans. No reason to crap on someone else's enjoyment. Go Loons!

This is very true. Admittedly this is hard to do with regard to professional (and increasingly college) football. However I'm not sure if any Viking fan is in it for the enjoyment, so at least I have that out.

    1. Very much enjoyed the show. I don't know Weird Al's original stuff as well as I know his parodies, but it was a great time and his band is really awesome.

I think this is the first time I've met anybody from the WGOM in person. Was great to meet you, although briefly.

  2. I got some shrimp on sale, and made some really good, simple grilled shrimp last night, with grilled broccoli on the side.

Made a marinade of olive oil, the juice of half a lemon, 2 tablespoons of gochujang, 1 tablespoon of sugar, a bunch of garlic, salt and pepper. I put enough of the marinade on to coat the shrimp, and kept the rest for dipping. Marinade the shrimp for 30 minutes, put them on skewers, and grill them (5 minutes or so on high). I would have liked it a little more spicy, but it definitely worked.

I had never tried grilling broccoli before, but I gave it a try, since I already had the grill going and didn't want to heat up the house. I mixed up the other half lemon worth of juice, a bunch more garlic, olive oil, red pepper powder that I got for making kimchi, and salt and pepper. I tossed the broccoli in about 3/4 of the sauce, grilled it for 10 minutes or so (turning a couple of times), and then tossed again with the rest of the sauce. It ended up pretty similar to roasted broccoli, but with a bit more char and a bit more crunch. A success as well.

    1. I love a sweet/hot shrimp treatment on the grill. I usually just do a bit of oil, some honey, and Cholula or Tabasco, easy peasy.

      1. Also good with shrimp: Tossing them in lime juice and Tajin, which is a magical spice.

Speaking of Tajin, add a healthy amount to a glass of High Noon watermelon seltzer.

    2. Grilled broccoli is a thing. Also good with some smoke.

      Also also, smoke-grilled green beans!

  3. The Twins are 4 games over .500 today. They were 4 games over .500 on this day in 1987. Just sayin'.

      1. No, we'll have to settle for a Mahle, Winder, and Ober. And a Larnach and Jeffers as sweeteners.

      2. This is how I imagine the scene (read in Jim Ross's voice from WWE)
"Oh my gawd! Oh my gawd! It's Frank Viola! He's returned. And wait a minute... he's calling a friend out to join him.... It's Jack Morris! Oh my gawd!"
