I agree, HOWEVER, a friend of mine shared a really funny reason for rooting for them:
Nothing would be funnier to me than Cleveland finally winning a World Series after a not insignificant portion of the fanbase pretended to swear off the team because it changed its name.
At a financial meeting this week it was pointed out that each of the three times the Phillies won the WS, the US economy took a nose dive. Look it up.
I can find two World Series wins but not a third. Their 2008 win was in the middle of that recession, however that wasn't announced until after the Phillies win.
Sorry - three Philadelphia WS wins...
The Philadelphia Athletics won five World Series: 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930. The Philadelphia Stars also won the Negro National League Championship in 1934.
One of those years does stick out admittedly. There was a panic in 1910-1911 but the Wikipedia page is extremely short. Wikipedia lists another in 1913-1914 but that one didn't even get a page.
