August 23, 2023: By Any Other Name

Jane's friend gave Rick a Super Mario shirt. It had images of all the characters and such. However, it took Rick about 4-5 times of wearing it before I finally noticed it actually says "Super Miguel". No idea.

  1. Given that the White Sox can’t fire their owner, I’m optimistic that, post-Ken Williams/RickHahn, they’ll simply find another way to squander primes of the current group.

I admired Ken Williams for speaking his mind about the rehomogenization of front offices around MBA/McKinsey types. I’m not sure how MLB solves its management culture problem as long as that’s the template for getting a front office job, but I hope the league hires Williams to develop new on-ramps for talented people from more diverse backgrounds and continue pushing that issue out into view so it can’t ignore the problem.

Well, they hired on Tony La Russa as a consultant, I’d say that’s a great start toward squandering their talent!

    1. They do a better job of maintaining Soviet aircraft carriers, too.

Kinda hilarious they painted the spacecraft safety chartreuse when nobody’s landed in that lunar region before.

    1. The schadenfreude would be much sweeter if the Twins were more than just the leader in a very bad division.

      1. The unbalanced schedule is gone, so I’m pretty cool with schadenfreude. On the other hand, I don’t have any particular strong dislike for these Yankees. On the other other hand, it’s because they’re not very good. So basically I want terribly to see them lose when they’re winning, but when they do, I stop caring about them. Can’t win.

          1. I listen to John/Suzyn on the weather radio to get to sleep sometimes. Nice to hear "these guys suck" once in a while.

          2. I'm not a fan of schadenfreude overall but I can't help but chuckle at the logic that a young Yankees fan of suffering the most of any fans because he/she has never experienced losing.

          3. That’s a great argument, genuinely, though I find it increasingly difficult to hold fans against players, and I don’t have the energy to dislike many of them. Give me more Aroldis Chapmans and Trevor Bauers, though, and I’ll make exceptions.

  2. It's looking like I'll have one extra Hold Steady at the State Fair ticket if anyone is interested

    1. Woah. Forgot this is happening. I’m super pumped to see Dillinger 4 as an old man from a seat at the state fair.

  3. No game log? Dog days of summer?

Are all Milwaukee pitchers slightly plump, bearded guys?

  4. Say sean, not sure if it's me or the site but I'm having major lag here. I don't really notice it anywhere else.

    1. I've sometimes noticed it but it's been too variable to pin down. Might be a WordPress thing.

      1. And the number at the very bottom is the time in seconds of how long it took to generate the page. Right now, I see 0.251 so a quarter of a second to build this page. Submitting this LTE will take a bit longer, such as two or three seconds but a refresh will then be fast again. Any additional time outside of that is outside of page generation. Your browser's developer tools will include a more complete timeline of how long everything took.
