August 25, 2023: Golden Years

I got an email from the AARP asking me to set up a membership. I was confused why I'd be receiving this, but then remembered I often enter birthdates far older than my actual age for websites/signups where my actual birthday is not essential. For example, I'm something like 83 in the eyes of the BoF. They must have pulled data from one of those sources.

  1. I get emails and calls all the time from AARP and I am not confused. I am just old.

On another note... yesterday was "a day" at the joint. Had a lady pass out on our patio, which was a bit scary. Ambulance eventually took her away. This happened minutes after a group of 24 motorcyclists and a group of 30 shriners showed up without a reservation. Around the same time a new host got into it with another host and throughout the day she was trying her best to coerce me into admitting an ADA violation. She has a medical condition that does not allow her to lift more than 30 pounds. She never mentioned this at anytime during onboarding or training until yesterday when a fellow host asked her to carry in a bus tub. I immediately took care of the situation, made sure all potential supervisors and trainers were aware of her limitations. She then developed a horrible attitude with anyone who tried to train her. In 3 conversations with her she repeatedly tried to say her attitude was the result of the "bigger ADA issue". So... today I will be letting her go as she obviously does not fit our culture. I expect it will not be the end of my contact with her or her representative. Ugh.

    1. Sorry to hear this.

On another note, I was talking to someone who had been I. Alexandria recently and they told me about this great restaurant there and I asked is it zooomx’s place? Yes. Yes indeed it was.

      1. That is cool to hear boss!

Update on the termination experience: She demanded her check within 24 hours, which I said would not be a problem. Got my accountant to cut the physical check within an hour. She texted me that since she had filled out a direct deposit form during orientation, we MUST pay her in that fashion. So... my accountant figured out how to do that. Then, probably an hour after termination she posted a shitty review on a local facebook dining page that was full of lies. Luckily that page administrator pulled it down pretty quickly. Hopefully, she got it out of her system and will move on.

        1. You didn't completely dodge that bullet, but it seems like it only grazed you and you're pretty good at first-aid. Also, that woman is in danger of being gathered by squirrels.

  2. Today we are saying goodbye to my granddog and the best four-legged co-worker a person could want. Yesterday Belle stopped eating (pancreatitis?) and has labored breathing, which added to her on-going gradual kidney failure and other problems that will nag an almost 16-year old pup, the writing was on the wall. This last part just happened so quickly to an otherwise active member of our lives. The vet agreed that this was the time. Runner daughter has discussed with in-home services and is spending some quality time while we wait for their arrival. It's going to be a tough transition.

    1. So sorry to hear this, Rhu. Even with a new dog in the house, I still miss our old one and that's a wound that takes a long time to heal. Thoughts and prayers, for real.

    1. I am old, but I really haven't gotten that much from AARP. Don't know why not, but I'm grateful.

  3. I haven't signed up for AARP yet, but a friend has and said it's actually a good deal. Something like $16 a year and easily save that much with the hotel and other travel discounts.

  4. Putting in egress windows this weekend. (Hey, Zombieman isn't the only one with home improvement things!) We dug the wells 2 years ago, but winter, then other things came up last year, so just getting to the windows now. We've gotten the first one cut out, and because we decided to go wide and just use an existing block line, the process was relatively easy (I mean, I'm exhausted already, it was a lot of work, but we've got one done, so that's good!). I knew the dust would be bad, and I hung plastic sheeting, but I still did not properly anticipate how awful that dust would be. Even with the plastic, breathing anywhere in the basement is awful, and it's especially bad inside the sheeting. We've got masks and all that, but still. Wow.

One more window to cut out, then building up frames tomorrow and installing the windows. We discovered our blocks were wider than advertised, so we need to buy some addition boards to cut in, and I suspect the actual framing is going to be stupidly slow. But it'll be nice to actually have them in. We're hoping to make 2 additional bedrooms downstairs, so that all 4 of our kids can have their own. They'll probably be fairly rough, at first - might even just keep the existing concrete floor for a bit - but eventually we'll get there. This feels like a big step.

Also, our neighbors are doing construction right now and they generously offered us the use of their dumpster. Probably couldn't have worked out much better.

    1. I did an egress install with my dad during high school. Based on that experience, when it came time to do two in our current house, we paid a guy. I haven’t finished the interior trim, but otherwise getting the natural light into the basement means the project has been a great outcome.

      1. We need new windows in the basement, but ours are just normal like 2x3, not egress.

Seeing as how we just got 11 new upstairs windows (and need 8 more), we're probably going to put that one off for a while.

      2. I'm reasonably confident Aquinas is going to choose to hire people in the future too, after doing this with his dad.

OTOH, I did pretty much a whole addition with my dad (except the cement work and electrical) when I was in HS, and that's why I think I can do this stuff now. OTOH, my FIL is helping me with the demo part today and my dad is helping me with the construction tomorrow. So really the only reaason I still think I can do this stuff is because my dad is still able to do it.
