March 21, 2024: Bye Bye Bossman

Jane and I both have goodbye parties for bosses we don't particularly like on the same night at the same time that we both kind of have to be at. Still trying to figure out what to do with the kids.

  1. This Shohei news is just devastating. Even if it is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he wasn't involved or knew of any gambling, the fact that it is that close to baseball's best player hopefully sounds the alarm bells across all sports.

Professional (and big time college) sports has made a deal with the devil on how closely they've embraced gambling. J.B. Bickerstaff, coach of the Cavaliers, just yesterday spoke about the abuse coaches, players, and refs are coming under from disgruntled gamblers. It's only a matter of time before we find out that a player, coach, ref, etc., was involved in a major game rigging scandal, or worse, gets killed by an angry gambler.

    1. It wasn't game rigging but college baseball had someone attempt to use inside information to place bets. The only thing that stopped it was the bettor admitted to it while making the bets.

    2. I've been telling anyone who will listen that this recent marriage of gambling and sports has made the fan experience so much worse. The worst of it is going to hit the NBA (I mean, Scott effing Foster is still employed) because some of the refs are, in my opinion, either on the take or incredible bad at their job. But even outside of that, the constant bombardment of gambling ads is just incredibly obnoxious.

  2. Found a KNSI ad online for Yes tickets going on sale for an upcoming St. Cloud concert, and had to laugh when their attempts at being clever by embedding Yes song titles into the notice included two ELP song titles. Too clever, guys.

  3. My mom is out of the ICU, but the road to recovery seems very long. She spends most of the day sleeping, and she eats very little beyond what her doctor said is his minimum, below which he will put her on a feeding tube. (Imagine someone with the elocution style of Tommy Smothers threatening you with a feeding tubeā€¦) She refers to the speech therapist who feeds her breakfast as ā€œMother Superior.ā€ Her speech & vocabulary is unaffected, although her responses can be delayed. She has been having trouble making sense of her wall clock for days and couldnā€™t do basic math yesterday. More worrying still is that she identified a passage from the ā€œSpringā€ concerto of Vivaldiā€™s Four Seasons as Mozart, although she correctly identified pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, & Bach. Sheā€™s a violinist, so any cognitive impairment related to music is likely going to devastate her.

Meanwhile, we have a meeting with my stepmomā€™s oncology team at Mayo this afternoon. We know she has chemo in her future; today we expect to learn more about the course.

  4. My hometown friends have both men's and women's brackets. No money involved. I have the Drake women beating Iowa and LSU but losing the championship game to South Carolina by 64.

      1. Was a weird finish. They had a chance to put ā€˜em away mid second half and just didnā€™t. Sure seemed like something was up with Tucker at the endā€¦maybe he was sick?
