Dominican Digest: Games of 12/6

Jorge Polanco continues to hit.  To mark the best batters in the Licey-Oriente game, put an X on Valdez.

LICEY 3, ORIENTE 2 IN ORIENTE

Twins:  Dan Rohlfing (Licey) was used as a defensive replacement but did not bat.

Licey:  Wilson Valdez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Yamaico Navarro (Yankees) was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Oriente:  Alex Valdez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Gustavo Nunez was 2-for-4 with a run.  Andrew Sisco struck out three in 2.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit and two walks.

The game:  Licey scored single runs in the third and fourth, but an Elian Herrera (Milwaukee) RBI single and a sacrifice fly tied it in the fifth.  It stayed tied until the eighth, when Alex Hassan delivered a two-out single to give Licey the lead.  Oriente got the tying run on in the ninth, but could not advance him past first base.

AGUILAS 7, ESCOGIDO 5 IN ESCOGIDO

Twins:  Danny Santana (Aguilas) was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Jorge Polanco (Escogido) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run.  Pedro Florimon (Escogido) was 0-for-1 with a walk and a run.  Deibinson Romero (Escogido) was 0-for-2.

Aguilas:  Zoilo Almonte (Yankees) was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Hector Luna was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Kelvin Villa struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Escogido:  Pedro Ciriaco (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Melky Mesa was 2-for-5.  Daniel Corcino (Cincinnati) struck out four in three shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks.

The game:  Each team scored three times in the second.  In the fourth, a sacrifice fly and an error put Escogido in front 5-3.  Aguilas took the lead with three in the seventh, with Almonte driving in the tying run with a double and scoring the go-ahead run on a Luna RBI single.  The last seven Escogido batters were retired.

ESTE 1, CIBAO 0 IN CIBAO

Este:  Mayo Acosta (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Jason Rogers (Milwaukee) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Bruedlin Suero (Tampa Bay) pitched five innings, giving up two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Cibao:  Jonathan Diaz was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Dylan Owen pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk.

The game:  The game's lone run scored in the sixth, when Rogers singled and scored on a throwing error.  Cibao's best scoring chance came in the first inning, when a double, a walk, and a bunt put runners on second and third with one out.

  1. He's mostly played middle infield. He turned 20 in July and had a good year in Cedar Rapids last season, following a good year in Elizabethton in 2012. Obviously lots of things could happen, but he's looked good so far.
