This post brought to you by the fact that the last two times I've gotten in the car I've heard, respectively, "U Can't Touch This" and "Gangsta's Paradise".
Hip hop is one genre where I often find myself lost. I know what I like (and it tends to be mainstream). I don't really know what I don't like (because my exposure is somewhat limited). I know that there are songs I tend to get tired of, and some that I could listen to a lot. I know that I don't know a lot about the history or movements or artists. I know a little, but that's pretty cursory. Anyway, it's a topic I can't speak knowledgeably about, but I'm guessing there are plenty of people here who can.

So: two hip-hop tunes, but both well to the periphery of the genre. (6 and E).
One for me (5) but you could make an argument for another (1).

Yeeeeaaaaahhhh, that's not hip hop.
I laughed.
Fair enough.
Sorry. off the hip-hop discussion but here's a link to a band's song ranking! Bonus: It's written by SBGville's second most famous resident.
http://www.vulture.com/2018/09/chuck-klosterman-ranks-all-131-van-halen-songs.html
Ol' Chuck definitely has a boner for the David Lee Roth version of Van Halen. I don't blame him and while I don't mind Van Hagar, I just think the DLR version (1.0) of the band had better songs. Few quibbles with the song rankings, but generally pretty good order.
If you don't want to go through the analysis of all 131 songs, the opening write up is worth your while and spot on.

NSFW
And apparently you (hj) and Scot too.
I can't even tell you if a song qualifies as hip hop or not. Not saying I dislike hip hop, but like the country of Spain, it's not a place I've been to.
But have you been to Oklahoma?

ON HIP-HOP
I really enjoy the genre, but wouldn't claim to have a ton outside of the 'mainstream' ... This is probably familiar/similar to most white, Midwestern kids of the early 90's, my catalog & in order of exposure (generally & non-exhaustive): Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Tupac, Biggie, LL Cool J, Warren G, Public Enemy, Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, Coolio, Busta Rhymes, Master P, Eminem, ICP (shudder), Method Man, Outkast, RZA/Bobby Digital, A Tribe Called Quest, DMX, Nelly ... yeah!
Sophomore year, I lived with a guy from the South Side and we visited Chicago over spring break - my first exposure to Common, The Roots, bootleg tapes of rap battles featuring Eminem before Dre., J Dilla, Nas, Talib Kweli/Mos Def/Black Star and Canibus.
While in the Navy, I recall being turned on to Hi-Tek, N.E.R.D., Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, CeeLo, Lil Wayne and T.I.
I don't buy many hip-hop albums anymore, but go out of my way to listen to newer stuff like Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Rae Sremmurd and Post Malone to name a few.
Speaking of Gangsta's Paradise, we were having a barbecue with and friends in Labor Day when Sheenie asked the Valet how old he thought she was. He said 23. I then answered, "23 now, but will she live to be 24? The way things are going, I don't know." And then everyone stared at me without apparently getting the reference.
(Not Here)
Rap music is the one genre where my tastes have shifted drastically over the years. I used to be obsessed with only listening to the most authentic underground hip hop I could find, the more local the better. But that kind of music bores me so much now that I'm older. Nowadays all I want to listen to is disaffected rich dudes rapping about how much xanax and lean they do. I think mainstream rap has gotten way better over the years, and I really love the creativity on the radio now. Future is a million times better than any rapper from 2000-2010. Rae Sremmurd are the most fun group in the world. I put Jeffery by Young Thug in my top five albums of all time. And this is going to sound hyperbolic but I think Lil Uzi Vert is the closest thing we have to Prince right now (not in terms of musical ability, but in terms of presence and style). I even like Drake! In short, rap music is great and keeps getting better.
^The above section is what I would have said back in 2016. Now in 2018 we have Tekashi 6ix9ine and Lil Pump and Lil Xan and SmokePurpp and I have no idea what the hell these kids are doing. The only teen rappers I like are Lil Skies and Juice WRLD. Most of the rest of them are incomprehensible.
My selection is pretty limited, but I can confirm that Jeffery is fantastic.
Why, thank you!
My first Hip-hop album was Naughty By Nature.
I soon had Cypress Hill, The Predator, and Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde.
Everything's gone downhill since then (only half sarcasm). I only blame half of that on Muggs running out of new beats. Maybe 10 percent belongs to Dizzee Rascal's "Bonkers", which I feel cut off a promising UK scene and sound before it had a chance to influence the US.
I'm lost with the newest substyles and flows.
I totally forgot to include The Predator and Cypress Hill.
Just dropping in to comment that Hammer's dance gif sync's nicely with Police's "Synchronicity II"...
Well, this seems like the appropriate place to announce that Mac Miller has passed away at 26.
Saw him twice at Soundset and was unimpressed both times, but still way too young
