Last night I heard that the hotel was 18% occupied, but with the upcoming Olympic swim trials and the CWS, that'll change in a hurry.
The Twins brought up Nick Gordon on May 23. He played the next day, getting two at-bats, and hasn't played since. Why did they bring him up if they're not going to let him play?
Starting today. Celestino also makes his debut today.
Minor Details is up, with another Twins sweep!
Charlie Watts is 80 today. I find it hard to believe that he will be willing to go out on the road again, but maybe.
It seems like performers very rarely get tired of performing. There are exceptions, of course, but a lot of them keep going as long as their health permits and as long as someone wants to see them.
Plus he gets to sit down on the job!
Charlie is a cancer survivor (diagnosed with throat cancer when he was 63). I think he'll go out as long as Keith wants him to, but man, he's 80!
I still haven’t seen Willie Nelson live; he was booked to come to the People’s Republic a couple years ago, but there was a double-booking snafu with his booking agents and the show was cancelled.
I can hear age creeping into his voice more & more, and I really want to see him perform. I’ll never regret seeing John Prine in 2019.
Willie is 88(!).
Yep, and he sounds pretty good, considering. You can hear the breath support isn’t there anymore, and his voice sounds less supple. He’s been out on the trail for a long time. Willie & Trigger are at the very top of my music bucket list.
I saw him in August 2019 at Target Center. It was pretty good. He lets the crowd do the chorus' and has the family do a lot of the heavy lifting, etc. But definitely worth it. I hope you get a chance to see him.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Willie in Waterloo, Iowa back in the day (setlist says September 20, 1989). It was about an hour before his show and we did the interview in his dressing room. I think I got a little buzz from breathing the air in there, it was obvious that he'd just indulged before we went in. The man was as nice and gracious as anyone I've ever met. I know a lot of celebrities don't like doing the media stuff, especially for small-fry local outlets, but Willie took it completely in stride and treated us like guests in his home. Unfortunately I didn't get to stay for the concert because we were on deadline and had to get back to the station to edit the piece together. I remember we talked a lot about Farm Aid and after we stopped rolling I asked him if he really got high on the roof of the White House. He just smiled a little wider and said, "That's the story they tell."
I really hope this story is true.
I'm hoping Jaggar demanded that Charlie not tell the story until he was 80, thinking he'd never last that long. Watts is like: ok singer, that's a deal.
I have a question for the Nation's solicitors. I read this story about a small biz advocacy group suing MLB, et. al. and had some questions. First, does this group have any standing in what seems to be essentially a contract dispute? Second, did they file the suit in New York instead of Georgia because MLB headquarters are in NYC?
Without knowing more details, I have trouble thinking that they'll actually have standing. They might be able to sustain some sort of detrimental reliance/promisory estoppel claim for any expenses they actually used (which apparently is 1.6 million in advertising? Nowhere near the 100 million they're claiming), but even that seems unusual. I have no idea what contracts MLB actually signs for the all-star game - and I've not heard of any other contract enforcement suit, so I'm guessing they've got pretty wide latitude. And the complaint lists some "tortious interference with contracts" claims, but those are super suspect to me.
In this case the parties are a D.C. entity as plaintiff and MLB, headquartered in NY, so they possibly had a couple options for where to sue but, if I remember my 1st year Civil Procedure, MLB likely could have forced them to come to NY anyway? (Wow, it's been a long time since I even thought about that...)
Having finally found and now read most of the suit, it reminds me of a few others I've read over the past 6 months or so, where there are a lot of unsupported bombastic accusations. Indeed, most of the propositions of the suit do not follow from the few alleged facts. For example, there is a lot of language about how MLB's "intent" was to harm businesses. That conclusion is entirely absurd, because it rests on MLB's announcement that Atlanta would host the game (without that announcement, there would be no harm upon pulling out), which means if MLB intended this they must have intended it 21 months ago when they made the announcement - some 18 months before the new law was passed. So basically, the suit alleges that MLB is the Minority Report with regard to Georgia voting laws...
"so I'm guessing they've got pretty wide latitude." = MLB has wide discretion in chosing a location and likely don't have too many contractual obligations.
I wonder if the city has more contractual obligations to MLB than vise-versa.
I'm hoping it goes far enough to get some backing claims on those stated losses.
MLB HQ's jurisdiction seems to be the appropriate venue. But this is mostly nonsense.
It's seemed fairly frivolous to me and that made me question how newsworthy the story actually is and if it was politically motivated. Because Sinclair Broadcasting, after all.
Garver might be out a bit longer than usual.

Six hours of online training tomorrow, then I work my first games against the Yankees next Wednesday, and Friday and Saturday versus the Astros.
Maybe you can be our good-luck charm against the Yankees!
all this talk of booze drove me to buy the fixin's for a boulevardier. Welp, future meat is unhappy with his headache, but current meat is totally on board.
That is definitely on the list of drinks to try. We ordered a little bar table and a couple of bar stools (the black version) for the ultra lounge, they should get here tomorrow but they won't get assembled until Friday, which is payday so we can also add to the bar stock. I'm getting a bottle of Campari so we should go ahead and invest in some sweet and dry vermouth, too.
I'm a fan of the 13 (or so) dollar Dolin Rouge for mixing negroni (or bourbon boulevardier). I got a good deal on Campari ~24 bucks and the bottle of Bulliet was on sale as well. Hard to say no to this headache. I also have a bottle of Bombay Sapphire for the traditional. I'm totally in love with the idea of the the ultra lounge. I may just build one next to the water rower so I can look at the thing I'm supposed to use to make myself healthy while I drink.
Seconding Dolin Rouge. I’ve also been known to use the Dolin Dry as a sub for white wine when cooking. Multitasker!
My water rower is in view of my bar, which has been my desk for the last year.
I bought a bottle of Carpano Antica a few months ago because a friend convinced me to get it. Its pretty spendy, but holy crap is it good. I won't get it again because of the cost, though, Manhattan's/Boulvardiers/Negronis taste just fine with normal vermouth. I'll have to look out for the Dolin Rogue.
Big fan of Carpano Antica ever since I first had it at Cento’s soft opening. I actually drink it on its own, on the rocks with a orange twist. Kind of a very dry, low-proof Brandy Old Fashioned vibe.

It bears repeating: ouch!
I hope it doesn't wreck his family plans.
